Finally, after 4 warranty replacements, my Skipper1000 is fixed! All it took was a simple "appearance" change mod

Tried to get a couple of different pics, it was either too dark in the car, or the flash washed everything out.
[attachmentid=21946]

Here is what the rear view camera looks like. Removed the trunk lock and mounted the camera where the lock cylinder used to be. Fabricated a custom bracket that holds the camera in place, used a little marine silicone around the opening to seal it. Wired the power for the camera to the backup lights so that it powers on when I go in reverse, which autoswitches the headunit to that video input, then powers down when I go out of reverse and the head unit goes back to whatever screen it was on prior.
[attachmentid=21948]

And just because I was feeling rebelious, I decided to "fix" it to where movies play without the car having the ebrake on.
[attachmentid=21950]

Here is what the camera looks like from the back of the car
[attachmentid=21953]

And yes, that is correct. I removed the trunk lock cylinder. Rear vision out of these things stinks. Anything shorter than 4ft. or so, or anything closer to you than a car length, you are going to hit it. Now I can see out of the back. The trunk still locks. The latch still works via the remote. I have owned the car for 3 months and not once have I ever put the key in to the trunk lock. That is what the button on the remote is for! And if for some reason it happens to fail, not like it is that big of a deal to lay a rear seat down and grab the kidnapper handle to get it open to repair it.

I knew it was going to set me back more than I cared to spend, so I searched around for a harness that would use the factory wiring, amps, and speakers. That one took a little research. But it worked fine. All 10 speakers work, both sets of subs, both sub amps. Running the other 6 speakers off of the head unit for the moment. It is a 4X50w unit so it picks up the slack pretty compairable to the skipper.

Harness-Metra 70-5521. $15 It is marked as Ford 03-up Amp Harness. It comes with two harnesses, the main one and a second smaller one for the subs.

Double Din mounting kit-Metra 99-5807. $19 On the package it is marked for a 04' F-150. BUT page 2 of the instruction pamplet has directions for the radio removal for a 05' Mustang! I had to do a little filing because of the ring that snaps around the front of the head unit, and also because the unit fit a little tight. If I had not done this, I would not have been able to use the lock bracket that came with the system.

Camera- $125 Was in an OEM style plain white box with no brand name on it. Got it at Frys in the security section of the electronic components department. Actually, I got a deal on this puppy. Somehow it rang up incorrectly and I only got charged $69 for it. Far be it for me to argue with a skilled employee of the store.

Video Extention Cable - $10
I bought a 5 meter extention cable to run from the head unit to the back of the car. This was sufficiently long. Also purchased at Frys.

Kenwood DDX7015 head unit.
This lists on Kenwoods web site for $1799, Crutchfield list it for $1399. I am a cheap bastard and bought one used ( with an unregistered warranty card! ) off of fleabay for $800.

Kenwood SIR-KEN1 Sirius Satellite Radio Tuner.
Kenwood and Crutchfield both list this for $99. I got it brand new, sealed package, including the antenna from fleabay for $50

Overall, the install was pretty straight forward once I got the mounting plate to fit the way that I wanted it and made sure that I could secure the head unit in the dash. The cable from the Sirius unit was long enough that I ran it beside the video cable under the console, under the back seat, and to the trunk. About the only other parts needed were a piece of roof flashing that I had laying around. That is what I made the bracket for the camera out of. And I don't really think I needed to do that. The marine silicone had it in there pretty solid. I just did it for a saftey measure more than anything else. Oh, and a small piece of velcro to hold down the satellite antenna. I didn't want it stick to the trunk or the roof of the car, so I put it in the back deck and ran the cable down through one of the pop up plastic covers in the deck. And yes, it works fine. If I open the trunk while the car is in the garage, the reception fades in and out. But as for driving around, it does not lose reception, even passing under overpasses.

The camera was really the only thing that took a little planning. I was having a really hard time coming up with a solution. At the car audio stores I looked around in, they either wanted to sell me a square camera that I would have to glue to the car somewhere ( for $225! ) or one molded in to a chrome license plate ring. That was a good idea...but...I would have had to cut a slot in the bumper cover the entire length of the license plate ring because of this 2" lip it had across the top of it. Plus, it was WAY expensive. Then a friend suggested maybe looking at a security or survelance company to see what they had. I went to a couple of places and the best I could come up with was a peep hole camera for a door. It would not have recessed in to the GT badge, but would have fit flush on it. Plus it was black and white. And it was about the same price as the one that I found that was color. Glad I shopped around instead of impulse buying like I usually do everything else.

AND.... the accessory delay works!

Doc,

That is just slicker than owl poop! Very clever solution to your problem. I would never have the spare cash to spend on such a rig but many on this site would and I think they will find your post very helpful. Agree on the trunk lock, you really don't need it. Excellent work!

where did you get the harness: Harness-Metra 70-5521 ???

I have been searching the web and cannot find where to order this. Im am looking at buying the JVC KD-AVX1 but I dunno how to rewire the car to get the door subs to work. (not to mention getting the DVD to play when moving will be a task) Installers in this area basically suk and don't want to deal with JVC products and/or Mustang systems.

Does that Kenwood play mp3's encoded on a DVD+/- R? Thats they only reason Im look at this JVC. I watched the 7015 go on Ebay from $600 with 22 minutes left to $890 at ending.

I found this pic of the harness. What do the RCAs connect to?

That pic looks exactly like the harness I used. Got it at a local stereo shop. The RCA connectors connect to the sub woofer outs on the back of the head unit. It worked fine for getting the door subs and the rear subs to work. Only thing was I had a hum in the subs. And it was there even without the car running. I bought a PAC SNI-1 line filter and it took care of most of it. It is still very slightly there and can only be heard when the volume is all the way down. Actually the hum is kind of strange. I can change the pitch of it by adjusting the dash light brightness! Tried disconnecting the illumination wire, made no difference.

No idea on the MP3 question. I honestly have not looked in to it, but I did intend on doing so. Just have not had the time, or been thinking about it when I did have the time. I will give it a shot tonight and let ya know. Also, I was planning on going with the Kenwood Music Keg. It has 10gig of storage! So if it doesn't work, it doesn't concern me that much. The satellite radio makes up for it. Always something to listen to.

As for getting the DVD to play while the car is not in park, or the ebrake on ( in the case of a standard ) that was pretty simple. Just ground the wire intended to hook to the park switch/brake switch.

I just ordered it (harness) from Crutchfield. Thanks for help. I thought about the KEG, but I figure a 1 $ DVD-R is cheaper. Plus I have well over 10 GB of music.

OK, so I threw about 4gig of MP3s on to a DVD. I put some in the root directory, I put some in to an artist/album folder, then put some in to an artist folder with albums as sub folders. Plays them like a champ! No problems at all reading at least two folders deep in sub directories. WooT!!

OK So I've got my new HU but I cant figure out the aux harness.

I see the 2 RCA cables and the 2 remote power leads. I got the RCAs to front preouts. But where exactly do I connect the blue/white power leads. Do I splice them both into other wires. I only have 500 system not 1000.

The two RCAs are for the subs. Hook them to the sub out of the head unit. You will only have one that works ( the door subs ). If you have two sub outs on your head unit, hook them both up. If you only have one sub out, swap it around until you find the right one. Not going to hurt anything to twist both of the blue/white amp on wires together and hook them to the same source from the head unit.

I have the "pop" too with the Pioneer AVIC-D1. Anyone know how to eliminate it??? I've tried volumes, different settings and such and it won't back off at all. Any ideas??

Crutchfield told me it would be there and I would have to put in some line level things. I didn't really listen too well something about 5V v/s 12 V. I'll have to call them back.

Crutchfield tech support says that the new deck is supplying 12V to factory amp. But the amp only wants 5 volts. He says that we need to go to radio shack and order this part: http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?cook...uct_id=276-1770

They weren't really up to speed on the fact that the harness has 2 remote power leads though. And said that they do not have any data for people with Shaker 1000.

What does the Kenwood do when power is off. Does it flip around and show a blank back like there is nothing installed in car or does the screen stay visable? I have a kenwwood in my beater car that flips all the way around so when you walk buy it looks like a factory face plate with now stereo installed.

Awsome install by the way,
