Matte finish for dash chrome parts

I know I'm in danger of spraying all the shiny parts with matte lacquer, but I'm counting on you guys to let me know when I'm going too far That said, I am pretty pleased with how my latest spraying session came out. I did the A/C rings and the rings around the tach and speedo. They now match my shifter, the steering wheel spokes, and the trim around the radio. Also, the A/C rings just about perfectly match the short vent tubes that go into the dash. Same matte silver.

As for the FRPP chrome-look cam covers under the hood...no matte for them. They stay shiny.

Looks good. Not too busy. The contrast with the Red and Black looks good. Silver is at a maximum and you are indeed in danger of going "over silver". Looks great just as pictured, good job.

One thing is you can bead-blast your pedal covers and get that satin look if you want those to match.

Thanks Shaun

The pedals are probably OK for me. They aren't too shiny. I do need to replace my MGW "Eject" button. Mine is chrome. I ordered a new one in satin. They're only $23 so I figured it was worth it.

I should mention one thing. Those A/C rings are a little tricky to get out. There are two thin plastic clips with triangle-shaped retainers. I didn't break them, but I think they could be damanged fairly easily if you yank too hard or pull at an angle. I couldn't manage to just pull the rings out by hand. I used a nylon winshield installation tool that is a shaped like a big skinny tongue-depressor to pry them loose.

Put the can down and step away slowly...

Nah, but I have to agree with shaun_beauchamp.

You need a Bullitt steering wheel. Other than that I like! :thumbs-up:!

A man has got to know his limitations

I think I will put down the spray paint can for now....but that Bullitt steering wheel sounds interesting.

I was really surprised when I sprayed the trunk medallion

It's a small change, but it does look nicer (in my opinion) than the bright chrome.

So did you use a silver matte paint for those? I have convertible and the shiny chrome will glare into my eyes when the sun is in the right spot and have been thinking it would be nice to tone them down. Besides, it would then match the brushed look on other "brushed chrome" parts like the steering wheel and shifter.

Sorry Jim - took me a while to get back to this

I have a convertible too. I used Model Master Flat Lacquer spray (#1960). It comes in a shorty rattle can and is availabe in most hobby stores. It's about $5-6 as I recall. I was able to get those A/C rings out and spray them individually (be careful pulling those things out). The chrome around the tach and speedo is part of that left hand dash cover just over the steering wheel. It comes out in one piece (pry from the side with something plastic or non-marring). I masked and then sprayed the chrome parts. For prep, I just washed everything with Dawn dish detergent and made sure they were all dry. I sprayed on about four light coats letting it dry for about 20 -30 min between coats.

There's just enough shine through the matte lacquer to keep the rings looking like metal and not cardboard. I think you'll like it.

I took the chrome off then painted & clear coated the exterior. Then put the chrome back on!
The inside of the vents are flat w/no clear.

Its like the exterior now - Polished like a black mirror.

Im putting in a Saleen guage cluster so install pix if you want em maybe after Thanksgiving.
