Mach 460 Stereo Upgrade

Mach 460 Stereo Upgrade

I'm looking to upgrade the head unit in the Mach 460 Stereo system that came with my 2003 Mach 1. Just wondering if anyone has done this and if so could you maybe post advice on the proper way of doing this.

I've done some reading on changing out the factory head unit on the Mach 460 and from what I gather it looks like it's a major head ache, some people go as far as saying to pull the whole Mach system and start fresh with new system. I really don't want to do this because I'm pretty happy with the sound I get from the system and I really can't afford a whole new system right now; all I really want to do is add an after market deck to the existing system to hook up an iPod. I'd also like to add 10" subwoofer, would I need another amp for this?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If no one has done any of this themselves but rather upgraded a Mach 460 at a stereo shop could you please post what you had done to your system. Thanks, and have a Happy New Year everyone!

When I had my '99 vert I had the whole system changed out. It was a custom fabrication and sounded great but I lost ALL of my trunk so never doing that again. That said, you can change out just the head unit. Crutchfield had a wiring harness to splice the 460 into an aftermarket head unit. Now if you want to add subs you will most likely have to add some kind of amp as well if you really want them to sound good as that will be more power being sapped from the 46o system or the new head unit. I really don't know more than that, it has been a long time since I had my '99. I miss that car, but my new one will more than make up for it.

Good luck!

MilStang, nice ride by the way! I sort of figured I may need another amp if added a sub to the system. I don't know why Ford chose to make the wiring on the Mach 460 so somplicated. I really want to keep this car as original as possible so I relly don't want to be doing excessive wire cutting or drilling. Just wish there was guide or something on the net showing how to go about it.

Thanks and let us know how it turns out!
