IPOD question
OK I admit I'm an IPOD newbie..... can someone answer a question for me?
I ordered a Pioneer AVIC D3 today and an 8gig IPOD to get started. Actually I ordered three more IPODs, one for my wife and each of our kids. My wife and I got to talking and she mentioned having to buy songs from I-tunes to load into the IPODs. My question is can't we just load MP3 files that we ripped from CDs onto the IPOD thru our PC? I can't imagine that we'd have to buy all the music thru Apple....
TIA.

You can load ANY MP3 from your computer onto your iPod. I have a pretty large collection that I've amassed over the years, and all of them went onto my iPod just fine. Since you mentioned ripping CD's, iTunes can do that for you as well, and automatically import the tracks to your iPod's library. A lot of people knock iTunes, but I think it really is a pretty good program.
Install itunes on your computer. any music you have on the computer should be transferred into itunes, if not just do a search for it through itunes and then it will transfer. For any music you have on cd's but not on your computer, just put the cd into the computer and open itunes, and when the option comes up click import. Itunes is a very easy program to use. Just plug the ipod in to the computer and all of your music will sync up, unless you want to manaully sync it then you have to drag whatever music you want onto the ipod. It probably sounds complicated but its actually pretty easy once you start playing with it. Good luck!
What Eric said
I just got a 160 gig & before I could get it to work with i-tune you need to do a software update then it should fly, i-tunes works pretty well for me I back it all up to one of the tera-bite drives, so when I did install i-tunes i believe it asked do you want to import all my music yupper and you can then manage to whati-pod will get what for music ie sensorship ie stuff not for kids to hear etc

We have 3 ipods in my house too and we all like different kinds of music. I personally don't like A LOT of the music my kids listen to. Everyone in the house has their own screen they login to with windows xp, so that keeps everyones itunes libraries separate. For us, that's the easiest way to manage them. Otherwise, if you all share 1 library, it takes longer to manage everytime you want to update (IMO). If one of the other users has a song in their library that you want, you can just import it into your own library.
Tom, once you get used to your iPod, you'll wonder why you didn't get one sooner. Its probably the single greatest invention in music. About your D3, where did you pick it up from? I'm like 90% ready to pull the trigger, and I just want to find the best price.

Hey Jeff-
Crutchfield..... I used Best Buy to "test drive" it in their showroom but decided to buy from Crutchfield. $899 with all the freebies and a free backup camera (don't know about the quality, but hey it's free). Plus no sales tax, which saved me about $90 on my entire purchase (Ipods included).
You can find them cheaper thru Ebay, Amazon, etc. but I felt like the bonus of having a company like Crutchfield selling me the product was worth the additional cash incase I need a warranty repair down the road.
It should be here tomorrow, I plan to install it tomorrow night before heading to our Midwest TMS meet & greet in Nashville, Indiana.
