In a previous post , I asked about removing the button and it turns out you don't have to remove it. I decided I didn't want to try and remove it myself and I took it to a local auto glass place to have it done. They tried the new mirror on the button before removing it and it worked fine. Anyway , one less thing to do and I'll be running the wiring this weekend and I'll let you guys know how it goes ...
Yes, I bought a mirror from Autodax 2 years ago. That was a Gentex compass mirror (no temp or homelink) for a friend. It arrived in good condition and it still works fine today. No worries with Autodax.
The stock windshield button will work just fine with the Gentex mirrors! No need to change anything. Good luck! I *love* my mirror and consider it a worthy mod.

mrkabc - Can you give us any details on taking the old mirror off. I looked at my factory service manual and it show using a special Ford tool. It also showed separate procedures for removing a dimming mirror and a dimming with compass. Although mine includes the compass it actually looks more like the the one that just has the dimming feature. Also I am assuming that although the old one is hard to remove that the new one is easy to install.
The glass shop removed my OEM mirror , but I believe there's a slot in the bottom and you use a small blade screw driver to pop it off. As for the Gentex mirror , it just slides on and has a set screw ...

GENTLY push against the mirror stub while pressing upwards. If you have compressed the "leaf spring" enough with the screwdriver the mirror will slide up and off the windshield tab. DO NOT use too much force! You could crack your windshield.
If you want, I can post a pic of the factory mirror stub off the car so you will know conceptually what you need to press against to free the mirror.
And yes, you are correct that the replacement mirror is a LOT easier to get on than the stock one was to get off.
Inside the car accessing the temp wires is stupidly easy... just pull the glovebox all the way down and the antenna wire grommet is visible. Run the wire down from the header to the passenger side "A" pillar (after pulling the plastic off) and drop it down behind the dashboard. You'll see the wire dangling in front of the grommet. Pushing the wires through is a pain - I ended up taking the plastic clip off the the plug and just running the straight wires using an awl to push the wires through the grommet.
Outside, I pulled the right front wheel and wheel shroud off. Once the shroud is off you will see the radio antenna wire and grommet in the firewall. All I did was run the temp sensor wires through the radio antenna grommet and then zip tied the line to first the antenna wire and then the windshield squirter lines as I ran the line into the engine bay. You can see in my pix above where I clipped the temp sensor. It works fine there and doesn't report TOO much heat soak... the temps are usually a degree or two higher than what banks/drugstore thermometers say so I guess I am not TOO far off!
It's a lot easier/obvious than it sounds from my description here. It's not that hard - I had a worse time getting the stock mirror off. I would say less than an hour from start to finish.

Where can I purchase the cheapest?
Interior Rearview Mirror with Temperature Display
Received my interior rear view mirror from AutoDax on Wednesday. They were great to deal with and had the best prices that I could find. I got the GenK 20a for $169 and most other places were $199.

ronslakie, that's great to hear. Did you tackle the install yet? This looks like a great deal although I would love to have homelink as well. Not sure if its worth another $150 just to have homelink though. Let me know your feedback once you get her installed. THANKS!
I haven't tackled the install yet. Have been fooling around with the old mirror removal and I think I will go to a glass shop today and have them remove it, I am a little concerned about forcing it too much and breaking the windshield. I'm also waiting for a little better weather maybe Thursday when we are supposed to get in the 60's.
Go to ford's accessories website in the tech section has install instructions on where to mount the temp sensor:

The job is a piece of cake. Really. No worries mate!
Larmo - The mirror I got from AutoDax is a direct duplicate of the OEM Ford mirror (minus the temperature reading) it even has the same numbers on the plastic shell on the back of the mirror. When you order get the one with the "m" harness (stands for Mito) it is a little more expensive but simplifies the install. I did the install today and it is not difficult. I would strongly recommend the website below, which a fellow named Jack Phelps posted. It illustrates the installation and shows a simplified way of passing the temperature sensor through the fire wall without having to remove the wheel or use the antenna grommet. I couldn't use the same location for mounting the sensor harness that Jack used so I found another location but my readings were a little high so I am going to experiment with some other mounting locations. Hope this helps.

I can vouch for the breaking windshield part. I tried to get the mirror off myself, had no luck. I see no compressed leaf spring in the middle of the mount. There's just a hole. There are two leaf-spring-like objects on each side of the central hole. I thought about getting the KD tool, http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/kdt3434.html. But decided to let the "pros" do it instead. He had me wiggle the mirror while he pushed in the tool he had. With just the slightest sound I had an 8" crack. They do not guarantee no cracking, because of how difficult these can be sometimes. They'll install a new windshield, at cost, no labor, for $190.

Bad luck man ... I took mine to a glass shop and they popped my mirror off with no problem. I took it to them because I thought we had to change the button for the new mirror and I didn't want to try that myself. As it turned out the OEM buttons works with the new mirrors and they didn't charge me anything ...
