How about an underhood light?
How about an underhood light?
I had one in my '96 GT, so the part could be purchased from Ford. I'm not sure how it would be wired up, but maybe somebody could figure it out and post a how-to.
I'll see what I can do. If my friendly Ford dealer's parts guys can get me the underhood light and switch for the '96, I'll post the prices and part numbers.
But, I might need some advice on wiring it up. It will need a constant source of 12V. I don't like to run things directly from the battery, but it is right there. There are no other wires on the underside of the hood, but the washer tubes might make a convenient place to piggyback the wires for the light.

I ordered the lamp from my Ford dealer. I'll let you guys know what I think will be the issues with installing it. Like I mentioned earlier, I can probably figure out how to mount it and make it work, but I may need some help with the wiring. Any suggestions will be welcome.

Okay, Here's the pic of my underhood lights.
I ran the wires through one of the holes that the hoodliner plugs use.
Ran wires down along the wiper fluid hose, then followed the hose behind the black plastic cover behind the battery.
(don't remember what it's called)
Installed an in-line-fuse to the battery and ran a toogle switch before the lights.
Yes, I know MY lights are blue, but you could use white lights.
The new LED strip lights are VERY bright. www.optxbystreetglow.com/products/ledaccenttubes10.gif
One of these in white would be more than bright enough to do most emergency night time work.
NOTE: I hooked up this same set up in my wifes car, with one added option. Extended the wire to twenty feet and added a all weather plug,
Now when we need an emergency work light we have a VERY bright
15" L.E.D. that will reach any part of the car.
You can see in the pic how bright the lights are in blue. Now just picture it in white.

Northwest GT,
The batteries positive terminal has a spot that you can add a new wire to it.(+)
Just behind it and to the passanger side is a fender bolt that you can use a good ground. (-)
There is a little notched back area to the drivers side of the fender bolt that would make a great spot for a toggle switch. (IF) you use this method.
If not, and you use a mercury type switch(goes off when the hood closes / on when its up).
You can still use these spots for power and ground.
I will try and take a pic, BUT my car is in pieces , I'm rebuilding the motor.
Good luck

Thanks guys. Yes, I think connecting to the battery directly (through a fuse) sounds like something I can handle. The light should be at the dealer on Monday. If I don't screw it up too badly, I'll post a pic or two. If I do, you may never hear from me again
how much was it?
OK Glenn, I just picked it up this morning. The price was $14. The part number is 1U5Z 15702 AA. It has a built-in mercury switch and a mounting post. But, when I had a look at it I realized that it needed the connector pig-tail. The contacts are enclosed and I wouldn't be able to solder directly to them. The connector is $6. I'll pick that up tomorrow.
One more discovery. It needs +24 V. Who knew. So, I'm going to have to search for that unless I can change out the bulb. Getting closer.

Sorry about that folks. It does not (really could not) use 24V. That was my "braino" (like a typo only in your head). There's a +27V stamped on the lamp, but that probably means the maximum voltage it can take. Or something of that sort.
I checked it out just now. Works fine on 12 V. Turns on and off with rotation. And, it will mount in one of the holes for the underhood blanket. There is a mounting plug on the driver's side that has a flat area around it. I am guessing this is where the light would have gone. The light has a mounting post with the same kind of serrated plastic that mounting clips have and it is the same diameter. So, in it goes. I just need to get a small fuse and some hookup wire. I'll hide the wires under the blanket and bring them down to the battery.
With luck I'll have some pics to post, and the thing will work.

OK, got the thing in today. The part number for the pigtail is 3U2Z-14S411-PDA. Two pics are attached. The lamp assembly has a trim plug on it, and it went into the hole for the plug that was holding that part of the hood blanket. I had to shave the plug on the lamp because it was a little to large in diameter.
The lamp has a switch. I don't think it is a mercury switch because you can hear it click on and off. Before I mounted it, I checked to see which way it would turn on and off. The way it is mounted as seen in the pic is correct.
I ran two #16 wires down inside the hood blanket and over to the side near the battery. I taped the wires to the washer tubing and brought the ground wire over to the bolt on the strut tower that already has a major ground connection. I still have to wire in the fuse and connect the hot wire to the + side of the battery. There are two nuts there either of which should work fine as a connection point.
It works and looks reasonably clean.
