homelink install

I installed a homelink unit out of a town car visor into the overhead console, works great and turned out looking like a factory install, no more fumbling for garage door openers, I programmed 1 button to open the gate at the entrance of the community I live in and 1 button to open my garage door.

this is the only picture I have, when I decided to do this I wasn't sure if it would work or not so I didn't bother taking any pictures of the process.
Any Ford, Mercury, or Lincoln vehicle with the homelink unit in the visor will work. only 2 wires used on the unit I installed out of the town car, the unit had a green with red stripe wire which I connected to the white with blue stripe wire for power, then it was black to black for the ground, tricky part was cutting the hole in the console, I removed the face plate from the homelink unit then traced the outline on the console as close to the edge as I could so there would be enough room for the unit inside, after I traced the outline I drilled a 1/2" hole in the center of the outline , then I used my dremil with a round sanding drum attachment to sand up to the line that I traced, I sanded alittle at a time and tried the face plate in the hole until it fit snug, then I attached the face plate back to the unit and installed it in the console, I used a piece of foam to wedge in between the unit and the plastic bar in the console that you'll see so that when you push on the buttons the unit doesn't move. be careful when making your hole in the console, if you make a mistake a new console with the intruder sensors retails for $490.87, it took me about a 1 1/2 hours to do taking my time but it turned out great and looks like a factory install.

the unit that I used came out of the sun visor of a Lincoln Towncar, it's all 1 unit kind of like a garage door opener, the buttons are part of the unit.

VERY cool! Do you have a part number and a price for the unit you bought?

Cheers,
Kristina

I work in a Ford parts dept and got mine for free because it was a warrantied defective part
(visor had a tear in the material) any Ford, Lincoln or Mercury visor with the homelink in the visor will work, if I were looking to get one I would check with my local junk yards, I bet you could pick one up for cheap there.

How hard do you have to pull to get the overhead console off? I have a Homelink control module, that I got from Ebay, and I want to take a look at the overhead console now to plan things out, but I can't get the **** thing off!!!!!

just grab hold on both sides and pull straight down, there are 2 retainers that hold it up.

Just an FYI:

older maximas (I know for a fact the 97 model years, so probably 98-99's, and possibly 95-96's) had the same controls in their visors as well.

Might want to look on ebay

this type of homelink module appears to be used by several manufacturers

Got mine the same way, it came out of a Five-hundred's visor that was being replaced in a used car reconditioning. I think it had a cig burn in it. IMHO removing the unit from the original visor was the biggest pain. Like it is mentioned above, just take your time tracing, measuring and trimming the console, the end result is very satisfying.
BTW, I used two part epoxy to bond the module inside the housing and shored up the back of the module with foam to eliminate flexing when pressing the control buttons.

After reading the OP's post I was planning on installing one myself. You can pick up units on eBay for around $20.00. Fortunately, before I bought one I realized my convertible top switch is right where the Homelink unit would go. I have an autodimming mirror with compass so I plan to pickup a new mirror with Homelink. A lot more expensive but likely the best way to go in a convertible.

Cool Wow! This could be the Fix!

"PB": I must say this is another very great idea from a fellow Stanger! Just imagine how many thousands of fellow owners out there hate wasting space storing those garage door opener remotes in their Mustangs! And believe that the FomoCo home link mirror dealer install, is just a little too spendy for most! When that money could be going out for some of the go fast goodies instead. Wow! This looks like it might be the fix, we have all been looking for Boys and Girls?

First. Just wondering if our own Mr."KC" could get us a good TMS price rate on some of these modules, new from FoMoCo? Next. If we could then, just get the Great (Mr. Install) Taco Bill to do an fitting in his own BadBoy, with his outstanding "How To" abilities and wonderful step by step pictures? This could upen up the flood gates and supply a nice fix for everyone, on a common need for all of the Mustang Masses in our big family out there! What do you think Gang? Wack? CalStang
