Heated Seats retrofit.

Hello, I am new here, been lurking around here for a very long time. I figured this was as good of time as any to ask a few questions.

I would like to retrofit heated seats in my 07GT, Its an option I have always wanted. I currently only have power driver seat, If its simple I would like to put in power passenger too.

So what are my options on heated seats? OEM? What would that run me and where could I get the parts?

Or aftermarket? Although safety worries me a bit on that front.

Any suggestions or project logs would be helpful. I tried to search this and didn't come up with much.

Ford makes a retro-fit heated seat kit that will work with a power driver seat or a non-power passenger seat. I don't know what the cost is (but I would just google "Ford accessories"). I don't know about adding a power passenger seat.

My car came with heated seats, but it only had a power driver seat and a manual passenger seat. I recently changed the passenger seat to a power seat. This was done by replacing the manual seat track with a power track, plus the appropriate wiring harness, power seat switch, switch ****, and a new seat lower valance. It was all plug and play.

The seat heaters have switches in the center console. I don't know if the wiring is already in the car for that or not.

This thread over at AFM may be useful for you.

Thanks a bunch RagtopV8. Awesome, now I have part numbers for the power seat.

Now anyone have any suggestions on heated seats? I live in NY and this past winter siting in the leather was like siting on a pice of cold steel, It would be nice to have heated seats. saw a few after market heated seats on ebay before. Anyone have experience with those?

I was also wondering if the heated seats are bottom only? Or bottom and back? Just wondering.

PM Jim010 - he retrofit the heater kit and passenger power seat if I remember correctly. You have to replace your AC controls with one that has the heater buttons if you want the factory buttons though.

Bottom and back are heated. They work well, with one minor annoyance. On the Mustang, there is one heat setting. You push the button, the seat heats up, and then after about 10 minutes it shuts off automatically. Ford needs to take a lesson from the Germans. On my Passat, the heated seats have five heat settings and stay warm until you turn them off.

I like the idea of changing the passenger seat to a power one. I may have to look into that.

Why don't they make "cooling" seats? For people like me that sweat if they think it's hot outside, cooling seats would be great. I wouldn't change my dark charcoal leather for anything though, it looks too good.

I was looking at this kit. It looks reasonably priced and its paper thin so it wont change the look of my leather seats. I am wondering how well it works. It even has two settings and you can cut it to size.

It's nice to know that a power passenger seat is an easy retro-fit. I passed on a car because of this. It's a little cheesy that Ford makes the power passenger seat an exact cost option.

Ok time to bring this thread back. Winter is coming fast.

I want to install the heated seat retrofit. However I have never taken the seats apart. Anyone have a guide on the seat covers? Id like to see it before tackling the job.

Thanks.

I just completed a complete interior make over. I had the Light Grey leather interior, purchased "take-off" black leather seat covers and used the above linked heated seat kits as well. Have had them in for two weeks, love them, no issues at all.

When doing the install of the heated seat pads, you WILL HAVE TO remove the seat covers completely.

Only issue is cutting out the hog rings, 1 set on the lower cushion, 2 sets on the upper. I used plastic ty-straps to re-install, (just one on each end, none needed in the middle) did not bother with the hog rings, as they would have had to be pushed through the heat pads, NOT RECCOMMENDED!
I was unable to find any pics of the seats pulled apart, and I just dove in head first. Did not take any pics of my work during the project.

It took me about 1 hour to pull the first seat apart, only about 20 mins for the second. I'll get into more detail if you desire, and will ost a few pics of the "after".

where did you mount the switches?

Also are any of the pads velcored on to the seat covers? Or glued on?

Hog rin replacemed with zip ties? Thanks for the info. Sounds like a plan.

Which kit did you use exactly?

Heated Seat Kit

I purchased the kit from "autowarm.com" which is linked to heatedseatkits.com

Under products the H3 Kit, which is two pads 9inches wide by 18inches long, more than enough for each cushion. 2 kits are needed, 1 for each seat. They are listed on ebay for 150.00 for 2 kits with free shipping. Took about 3 days USPS to my door. Yes, the seat covers use a velcro strip to attach to the cushions, the heated pads do not. They come with an adhesive backed end on each pad, but I used a little spray-on adhesive as well. Did not have to do any trimming at all.
Instructions are straight forward, I did notch out the seat foam where the wire loom passes, covered with a piece of duct tape.

They sell a drill bit for 10.00 that is correct size for drilling out hole to mount switch. I think it works fine, I had no issues. I mounted my switches on the center console top, one on either side of the first cup holder. Ran the wires up and under the carpet from each seat, into center console shifter area, then along passenger side up and behind glovebox to the heater control box. In-line fuse (included) easily accessible at this location, hidden from view as well. Ground went to Ford factory ground point, directly behind glove box door (remove the door for easier wiring access), Power tapped into thick PINK wire with WHITE stripe, which is found on the heater box connector. (Both seat heaters, one splice/tap) I used this wire because it is protected by a factory relay, and will only power when the heat/AC system control is turned on.(Dash switch which directs interior air flow) Also, only powered in RUN/ACC mode, don't have to worry about leaving them on.

To make things easier...if you have a power seat set-up....raise seat to highest position before removing it/them from car,(I have installed passenger power seat set-up as well) run all wires inside car with seats removed, including power point connections. Wiring provided is more than adequate length, broken up into 4 pieces per seat...each pad connects together to heater relay, then intermediate wire from relay to switch assembly, the switch assembly to power point. These last 2 wire looms will be installed with seats removed, once you determine switch location. The seat pads and relay will mount up under each seat.

I will post pics of my switch install and of the power poiny in the AM, when I get home from work. I will PM my cell phone to you and feel free to call.

btw...the company offers an install kit which includes hog rings, tool, wire ties etc. Not really needed but if you do not have small thin ties, worth while for the money.

I have AIRBAG front seats, no issues, no worries. Just remember to disconnect battery AFTER you un-bolt the seats, (need seat powered to move them back and foth to gain seat bolt access) so there will be no power discharge issue. I unbloted POS cable, then turned on headlight switch to insure complete power dissapation prior to wiring disconnect. Just old habit. Don't know if it is really neccessary.

Seats heat up great, better than my Ford Factory installed units in my 08 Escape Limited. Will post more info with pics when I get home from work in AM.

Pics and info

Some shots of the switches mounted on the console. I did not want toput them on the sides of the seats, not much room and a bunch of wires already there from the power seat, lumbar support and air bag stuff. Sorry for the blurry shot of the connector I tapped into, but it is located on the passenger side, about right knee high, on bottom of heater box. I pulled the connector apart and tapped into the female side (easiest access), utilizing the factory relay, as mentioned before. Used an eye ring connector to mount both ground wires to the shown factory ground point. All wires run from underneath the console, under passenger side carpet, up and behind glove box door. You can see one of the red fuse holders (there are 2), make sure you mark each fuse holder, identifying which belongs to driver and passenger seat. Again feel free to call (I'll pm my cell number to you) if you have any other questions. As for the drill bit used to cut out the switch holes, if you did not purchase it, I'll send you mine, and you can return it when finished.

I included a picture of the new leather interior as well, in case anyone wanted to see how the black looks in the LT grey interior.

The tapped power source is the thick pink wire/wht stripe in the lower corner of the picture. Keep in mind that this is an upside down shot, so wire is actually located in top right pin slot.
