I have a Passport X50 and would like to hardwire it. Where did you guys place your radar detectors and where what source did you use to hardwire it to? If you guys have pics, please post them. I don't have my car yet, but would like to do this on Friday. Thanks in advance.

I just did this last night on my G35 ( ). The neat thing about the 8500 X50 is that it can use a standard phone cord as a power cord, so you dont have to buy their expensive hardwire kit. Mount the detector up near the rear view mirror on the passanger side. Then, go buy a 10-15' standard telephone cord and run it up along the healiner and down the drivers side a-pillar (or passanger side, depending on which side your fuse box is in) right into the fuse box and tap into the fuse for the normal accessory power plug, and ground out the ground wire on a nearby bolt. Should be completely invisible. Someone with an 05 should be able to illaberate on where the fuse box is so you know where to tap into.

Let me know if you have any specific questions about it. Any standard 2 or 4 wire phone cord will work (2 wire perfered since you wont get confused about the extra 2 wires that you dont need).

Great, please provide pictures and such of install/placement. I'm going to get a V1 soon and I want to know where to so it isn't seen by cops and how to easily hardwire it.

Al, the Valentine has an adapter that has the lights/warning indicators right at the power outlet and disables the lights/warning indicators on the unit on the windsheild. I believe its a $30 additional option you can buy.

Edit:
Its in the store.

My friend was telling me that a telephone cord would work. So I can go to radio shack and buy a 2 wire telephone cord and one wire goes to the ground and the other to the power? I am poor at wiring, so this is new to me.

On my 1997 C5 Corvette, I was able to wire my V1 (best radar ever) to a AUX power / ground wires off the fuse box under passanger foot cargo area. Is there any extra AUX wires like this on the 05 GT ?

As far as placement goes, the sensor, whether built into the detector or a remote sensor, should be placed up as high as possible. Best place for an all-in-one is above or just below the rear view mirror.

yeah i have that too... you can actually hardwire that too so it sits somewhere closer to your gauges... thats what i'm planning on, up on the dash somewhere, while the actuall unit itself is up by the review mirror. Right now i have it in my 99 and didn't want to spend any time hardwiring it when i just have to take it out again, so it's on the adapter like the one in the picture.

Its a simple two-wire hookup-just find where you will mount it(as high as possible) and hide the wires. Just be sure you wire it to a source that goes on with the ignition and you'll be fine.

I have the V-1 and you are able to use any telephone cord with it.

My friend whom is studying Electrical Engineering and I tried to wire up my detector. The wire going to the "dome lights" in the headliner were all hot while the car was switched off. Anyone know of an easy source to tap into switchable power? I can run the wire to the passenger side fuse box, but thats a pain.

I think the dome light wires are only hot when the car is on and shortly after you turn the car off. I know when i lock my doors the lights go off. I think im going to hard wire my Beltronics radar dectector into that power. next week im going to be hardwiring my XM power and Radar power. So i'll post pics and do an entire write up on it.

I hard wired my V1 radar detector at the same time I installed my auto dimming mirror. I used 2 "add a circuit" fuse hoders in the fuse panel (passenger kick panel). 1 circuit for ignitin hot (radar detector and mirror), 1 circuit for constant hot (homelink). I ran the wires under the passenger side pilar cover, under the headliner, and out between the headliner and windshield where the mirror/detector are mounted. I have pics on my other computer and will try to post them when I have a chance

I wired my Gentex mirror to everything but the ignition wire right at the dome light. I ran the ignition wire from the fuse box with an add a circuit, up the pillar in a convertible, to the mirror. It was no problem at all. I also ran the the power for the radar detector from the same spot. I put the smart cord button just under the lip of the dash pad. Enough cord comes with it to make all the runs.

Jack, I'm getting ready to hardwire my X50 with smartcord as well. Is it best to put the detector low like yours or up high under the rear view mirror? Thanks.

I would guess the higher the better, but I have had and have 4500's in several other cars and they seem to work fine. I would keep it out of the area that is darkened and has the pony logo. I'm not sure if the signal will get through that. I have been pulling the 8500 and locking it in the glovebox if I leave the car parked open for any length of time.

Save your money on the smart cord.
PARTS:
1. A small inline fuse, 5 amps will be plenty.
2. 2 feet of “two wire phone cord with plug”.
3. Two sets of wire taps. Your choice. Or just tap directly to the wires and solder and tape.
(Most phone cords are two wire.) MOST! two wire GRAY phone cords have a RED and a GREEN wire inside. This is what I used and this is how I will describe the installation.

NOTE 1: My ESCORT 85 X50 would only allow me to wire it one way.
After you strip or use taps on the wires, just touch the plugged in phone wires to the stripped wires and the radar WILL beep or it won't.
Just switch wires if it does not. P.S. Turn on the radar before you try this.

NOTE 2: There are three BLACK wires coming from the light assembly,
two blacks are wired from the lights into a BLUE wire that has shrink wrap on it. This BLUE is the HOT or positive lead. The other BLACK wire coming from the harness is a loose BLACK lead for the entire light assembly (Lights and Motion sensor).

1. Pop off the overhead light case. Use a flat screw driver or just your hands...it is held in by just TWO clips on either side of the light.

2. Unplug the wiring harness to make your life easier.

3. Find the lose BLACK wire and tap that for the ground.
The RED phone wire goes to this.

4. Find the two BLACK wires that are wired to the BLUE light leads
and tap that for the power. The BLUE wire is longer and easier to tap.
The GREEN phone wire goes to this. Use the fuse here between BLUE wire and the GREEN wire.

5. Run the GRAY phone wire with the plug through the open slot in the headliner. The two feet of phone cord will be enough to mount the radar with suction cups anywhere on the high side of the windshield.

6. Plug in the factor harness, TEST EVERYTHING NOW! Reinstall the light case and you are done. P.S. You can leave the RADAR on it will shut down when the light turn off and restart when you turn off the alarm or open the doors.
