Pioneer announced two new radios at CES that support realtime XM-based traffic data so that navigation can incorporate congestion into traffic routes! (WOOT! now you can take the faster route!!). The AVIC-N2 is the one that's being hyped up all over the place, but it's one of those single-din flip open designs that seem like they'll fall apart if you look at them the wrong way

What is not usually talked about is that the AVIC-D1 is launching at the same time. For less money and is a double-din, in-dash design like the high end Kenwood unit!!!

Here's a pic. enjoy!

I just went to pioneers site, and the AVIC N1 is the ONLY one they are talking about.

In fact, here is a link to the AVIC N1's site: AVIC N1

BTW, I think youre confusing the two, the AVIC N1 looks to be a flip screen design.

MY bad... I was searching AVIC N1, N2.. I see the D1, and D2 now... wow, four systems. I need a side by side comparison of the four. I was originally going to go with the Kenwood.

N1 is the currently available flip up unit, it's ok. The N2 incorporates N1 features and adds realtime traffic. The D1 is the N2, minus DVD playback, in a two din package. I didn't see the D2 - that probably adds DVD playback. Where'd you see the D2 info? I looked long and hard just to find the D1 pic (on a japanese site of all places!).

The eclipse units look pretty good...found a few on ebay around $1200

I didn't find any Pioneer AVIC-D1's there...I think they retail at around $2k...

Does the Eclipse model's navigation come DVD based, or is there some sort of internal hard drive? I really hate the idea of having to leave a DVD in the player to use the navigation. I switch out CD's pretty heavily, even if I were to have a CD changer. The eclipse also doesn't mention any satellite radio. I want to have the sat radio controls built into the unit.

BTW, the CD changer for the eclipse retails for about $299.

Without navigation, the Kenwood still seems like the best solution.

Nah.

I love the fhe flip screen head unit youve got picked out. The traffic update feature sounds like a great investment. Are you planning to install it yourself?

i was at an eclipse dealer just last week and the 2005 avn2494 does have an internal hard drive and serrius sat. ready ,not to mention i personally have always ran eclipse head units and have not yet had one that would clip or "flat top" on an ossiliscope ,but the bad thing is it retails at about $2300, so pioneer ,and or kenwwod may be the way to go !but for me i will pay to play

Yeah, there definately needs to be a side-by-side-by-side comparison of these. Double-Din LCD is definately the way to go for after-market stereo upgrades. Does anyone have a release date of the pioneer unit?

The eclipse that my installer has in his car is dvd based but the head unit has two slots, one for the nav disc and the other for your cd's etc. i'm not sure if both slots play dvd movies but i know you won't have to hassle with removing the nav disc to switch cds like you do with the AVIC

"Spring 2005"

Us at The Mustang Source should organize a group buy of AVIC-D1's. I bet we could all get a sweet deal. If we could get 10 people to commit...maybe I could use my reseller's license to become a dealer.

Count me in on that deal if you get it going...I specifically ordered my GT with the plain stereo knowing I'd be replacing it as soon as it comes in. (*IF* if comes in... :bang: ) Love that AVIC-D1, though! Haven't seen any mention of it before in this thread, but it also has the Vehicle Dynamics display option - shows what Gs you're pulling; etc.

I hope that there really is a AVIC-D2 so I can have DVD playback and run a PS2 through the unit.

Man, I forgot about a PS2! That would be so awesome.

I definately want to get a double din unit, just for aesthetics. I also really want to have satellite radio integrated, which I don't think the eclipse has?

Not sure if the Eclipse has integrated sat radio or not, but the Pioneer definitely does.
