I believe it is 1.5 DIN.

If you are going to do an aftermarket install you will need a kit and harness.
Scosche has both adapters out now (Ford put the same radio in the F-150).

The harness is Scoshe FD23B.
The Kit is Scoshe FD1424B.

Nope...it's double DIN. However, for an aftermarket Double DIN, you'll need some sort of adapter to hold it correctly. I measured it...4X7. It's just that Ford uses a different bracketing method to hold the stereo in there. Thus the need for custom rails or something.

I talked to the guys at Car Toys already...they said they can do it.

Ya, definately double DIN. If they used a non-standard FORD design just wait a few months and all the standard aftermarket stereo manufacturers (well that make these sort of products) will have a bracket and wiring harness to make replacing the headunit as simple as making a peanut butter and jam sandwich. For those of you that are not able to make a sandwich, well, what in the world are you doing trying to install a car stereo

I plan on doing the same DVD Double Din mod next year when I get the convertible. Please post pictures after you complete the install. That space just screams out touch screen video.................

It's definitely bigger than a double DIN...I had my double DIN installed tonight, and it even looks a bit small in the space.

Here it is...I know some people won't like it, but it looks even cooler in person than I thought it would.

I got another CD changer for the car...it's mounted in the trunk. My setup is completely custom (nothing left from the stock system). I'll post up more pics of the entire setup later.

As for the head unit, it's a japanese import (Sony WX-7700MDX). I bought it from melting-pot.com. It plays CD's and MD's (minidiscs), and changes colors, just like the IUP instrument cluster. (It has more than 700 choices though...so color matching shouldn't be a problem.)

Thats cool. I have a Clarion MD player in my 97. I was thinking Id have to give up MDs since theyre really not that popular here in the U.S. and go back to CDs. Nice to see a newer head unit that will play MDs and CDs both.
But heres a question, and you might know, Steve, since it looks like youre really into sound systems. Do you think Sony will phase the MDs out for their new UMDs? It actually looks like a better format as it'll also store video as well. If so, I might have to wait to see what head units will have UMD compatability.

Not sure...Sony has been rolling out their Hi MD's lately, which have a higher capacity than the ATRAC3 ones do (like the ones I use), but I really don't know. Sony has been pretty committed to their MDs for a long time, and they're still extensively used in the media (my wife was a journalism major...they used MD recorders for interviews).

It seems that the best source for info of this type is Japan. If you can find some sort of website that gives Japanese news on audio, I've heard that for every 2 or 3 head units that come out here, like 4 or 5 come out in Japan.

I guess time will tell, but for now, I'm sticking with my MD's...I love the sound quality. The cool factor is pretty nice too.

mil: i'm looking at that unit from my dealer, word is it's a direct drop in with bracket to fill the extra space. I saw it installed on one of their custom 250s, and it looks very clean

steve: wow. that's *really* unique and matches the car nicely!
