Yes they just pop-off with a little force.
HERE is a little write-up I did when replacing mine.

I have a small ratchet that accepts 1/4" Hex Shank Driver Bits. That is about the best way to get them out.

If you look at the underside of the speakers from inside the trunk you will see the plastic screw anchors. I just sniped the plastic anchors in half and pushed the speaker up from inside the trunk. Takes about 2 minutes a side. Then put your new speakers in with #10 screws and nuts.

I was worried about scratching my tint or defroster, so thats why I went this route, worked great.

The speakers are 6X8s, the same speakers that have been used for years in the Taurus, Focus, Ranger, ect. The harness has been out for years. I used the harness off my 03 Focus that I bought at Circiut City, fit perfect.

cool then it is just a choice of either waiting till warrenty runs out or burning the hell out of the factories as an excuse to buy new ones, also i checked crutchfield and for some reason they say 5x7/6x8 would a 5x7 fit, i doubt it though that is the size for the 94-04 stangs

The speaker wiring harness is made by Metra PN: 72-5600. Available at circuit city for lik 10 bucks. Comes free if you order from crutchfield. And crutchfield says 5x7 will fit because they include an adapter bracket for 5x7 speakers. But the factory cutout is for 6x8 speakers. I put two infinity's out back and two pioneers in the doors.

Edit: on second thought, don't take my word on the metra part number. circuit city has a few different ford harnesses. PN 72-5600 sure looks like the right ones, but you can never tell from just a picture.

I just replaced all 4 and went through Crutchfield. They supplied all the wire harnesses for the install.

I got the pioneer 3 way speakers for a little more clarity up front and infinity 2 way speakers in back. To be honest, I can't tell much of a difference between the two way and three way. Each pair was less than $100 and performs well for a mid-priced speaker. I don't have a shaker system or amps so the performance I get out of these speakers is limited. I have personally heard the infinitys with an external amp and they sound great for the price. JMO. Rockford Fosgate also makes a 6x8 but I have only heard those at a bestbuy demo.

I used the Infinity Reference 6812cf up front in the doors and Infinity Kappa 682.7cf in the rear and like the sound over the stock speakers. As I said Crutchfield sent everything I needed to plug the speakers into the factory harness.

Best Buy also has the same adapters. Just go to the stereo installation bay and you can buy them their. I'm using Kenwoods in my car (with an aftermarket high-power head). It can get so loud that I get nauseous

Infinity speakers up front?

Hey mco05gt,

When I list speakers that fit the front door of the Mustang on Crutchfield - they state that the Infinity's do not fit. Did you have to do anything special to get yours in the door??

Thanks,
A-rex

No, they just droped in like the factory ones. If I remember they don't list any for the front. I found that when I called them they were very helpful making sure of the model of the car and what factory stereo I had so they could get me all the correct wiring harnesses. That is why I use them. And sometimes they have free shipping or dicount on a second set of speakers.

One more thing....

mco05gt,

Are you still using the OEM head unit?? I'm assuming you are - but want to make sure. I'm going to be putting in the Alpine 56xx (note sure of the number right now) - it's the one Crutchfiled has for $199 - I like the way Alpine integrates the iPod.

If you are using the OEM headunit - does it seem powerful enough to drive the speakers you have? And if it is - I'm sure the Alpine would be fine too!

Thanks!

Yes I am still using the shaker 500 and it made a great improvment over the factory sound!! I was going to replace my h/u with an alpine dvd unit but did not like the way it fit in the dash.

Shaker 500 - sweet!

I just have the base stereo - looking to upgrade the HU. Anyone know if the Alpine with 18 RMS watts will be powerfule enough to drive the Infinity speakers.

The front doors would have the Infinity Reference 6812f (range = 2-60 rms...180 peak) and the rear deck would have the Infinity Kappa 682.7cf (range = 2-100 rms...300 peak).

What are your guys thoughts?

The Alpine headunit is begging for aftermarket amplifies. If you plan to eventually amplify your system, Alpine is great. If not, I would suggest looking at something with a higher RMS wattage out of the box. I believe the stock Shaker 500 puts out around 15 watts of RMS to each of the normal speakers, however I'm not quite sure of the amount to each of the subs. Either way, any aftermarket headunit may be amplified, so pick whichever you like more.
