Car Computer in 2005 Mustang GT
Thanks for getting back to us Scott,
Interesting about the pop sound. I'm planning on using a Clarion single DIN headunit that I have now with a motorized LCD above it (two single DINs stacked I guess) and wiring the carPC through the Clarion's AUX input. Do you think I will get the popping sound if I go the AUX route?

Thats not the reason for the pop. Its do to the sound card intializing and inducing a pop. It does it when you turn on and right when you get into your operating system. To fix this you need to search mp3car.com for "amp ctrl" What it does is it shorts two pins on your com port which you run right up to the remote on the amp. It won't start the service until your all the way loaded up after the pops would of occured and then it turns the amp on.
have fun

Well, I will be the first to admit that I am speaking out of school when it comes to the car computer install and any issues with it.
But, just to avoid confusion for people with amp popping that have replaced their skipper units with conventional head units, it is because of the 12V+ line that turns on the amps.

I had some people ask for pictures to my Sunroof See link to pictures.

I used to live in Harahan/River Ridge area. I bought a ticket for Mardi Gras a week before Katrina so I'm coming out to visit friends.
For the most part I get in, it resumes from hibernate and jams start playing. Nothing like having your entire movie/music collection on there. Not to mention I add files to a folder and hit sync to download. No CD's or MP3 player to carry around. The OBDII stuff is neat too. 4.1 surround sound and as many eq presets as a guy could want.
The girls like the music videos and it makes waiting in line at the drive through fun. It's definately not for the average guy. You need some computer knowledge and time or deep pockets.
Occasionally I have to reboot or replug a usb device. I debated car pc vs Kenwood DD deck. The coolness got to me. I'm working on setting up the cruise control as music/audio controls.
Just my opinion.

Not if you install a Mac instead. Check out some of the cool Mac installs below. There's not as many software options for frontends but I'm sure it would be much more stable. I initially was going to put a MacMini in my GT but changed my mind due to the extreme heat in my area and just went with a Pioneer AVIC-D1 instead.

NOLAGT : Heat in the car can reach over 120 degrees in some places, and that is beyond the operating and sleep temperatures of most computers. It may be possible and may work but I think the lifetime of the computer would be cut short, not sure by how much.
SRQ05GT : I think the cleanest install would be place the Mac Mini somewhere within reach to be able to insert CD/DVD, like under seat or in glove box. Put a wide touchscreen in the dash location and run a nice frontend that can do with just the touchscreen. Then put a small bluetooth keyboard (maybe with trackball on it) for when you need to type things out and the OSX touch keyboard is too slow/clunky (such as Internet access parked outside a hotspot or in garage). Add to that a cheap USB GPS and a microphone to give you navigation functions.
There is definitely lots of functionality from a car computer. Everytime I think about it I want to do it. Maybe I'll try it if I move somewhere else though. I'd definitely like to see who all on this board has installed one.
