Wow, looks very slick! Awesome install.

Was it difficult mounting all that stuff behind the center console? I'm not very coordinated and had a horrible time just mounting a little soundgate LOCB.2 in the driver side footwell area... I eventually just gave up and electrical taped the **** out of it onto some junk up there. So for someone like me, is that difficult? I haven't found a good sized "carpc chassis" that would fit everything I would want yet...

I like car PC's!

Before you know it we'll have comps in the car from the factory that will let you download all your performance data into your home PC wirelessly. Or maybe update the car's software from your home PC!

And maybe use the screen space to display performance gauges! And you would set up the way the gauges look on your PC. Now, that would be cool!

Sounds like a cool setup. How much would it cost to put something like that together? Just the In-Car PC, not the audio mods.

Car PC Cost/Install

The cost for everything new was around 500. That's the screen, motherboard, harddrive, power supply.

The install was tight. There is just enough room to mount a mini (12cmx12cm) motherboard behind the area where the Shaker 500 goes. I cut a aluminum sheet to mount the motherboard and power supply on. Just takes time to squeeze in all the parts. I had just about all the interior out while running wires and installing new speakers.

Well worth the effort.

500 is less than I was expecting, looks like a nice setup for not too much cash.

Wow, that's sweet. I am not the most tech-smart person; what exactly are you using your PC for? By that I mean, other than audio what is a Car PC capable of?

Jukebox, GPS, Homework, Email, Internet, Video, Surveylance, Wardriving, etc...

Hook up Verizon EVDO and you can check traffic, find pizza, watch the news or anything really...

what about parking somewhere and checking out the wireless internet??

that would be worth it to me.

your passengers could watch movies, video clips... or listen to up to 120 gigs of music from your hard drive.

the possiblities are endless.

i like the idea, pretty cool in my opinion.

Don't forget, if you have an SCT Xcal, you can hook it up to the carPC via USB while it's hooked up to your OBD-ii port... then have gauges and graphs of every single engine parameter there's a sensor for! Want an AFR vs RPM graph? Plug it in, rev your engine, and .

Watch this demo too: (seems really easy to set up)

SCT Xcalibrator 2

Other than using the PC to hold and play mp3 and movies I also wanted to use it for logging data to the XCal 2. This works nicely when all the gauges and performance counters are set up.

I only wish SCT would release some APIs to get data from it outside their proprietary software. I want to include it in the custom software I wrote. There are other open architecture ODB-II readers out there, but they are $100 and I already have my Xcal.

I get wireless connections more than you would think. I should be getting even more when I install a antenna. TV stations are hard to lock in on but I don't have antenna for that yet either.

I looked up my records and the exact cost was $623 for the basic parts. Still cheeper than some GPS systems with smaller screens. I think mine is the only s197 with an 8" screen while still keeping the look of the stock console controls.

Here is a screen of the custom front end. I'm making this skinable so you can change the way it looks and functions.

Hey, it looks like you've done some research on this. Can you refer me to some good choices for ODB-II readers ideal for a carputer setup? (Good support community / existing open source API's/etc are a plus) I might not mind spending an extra $100-$200 down the road if it meant extra customizeability. ..cuztomizationability. ..."ability to customize."

I think I saw some OBD2 software somewhere that didn't cost anything and was really nice looking. Just can't remember where.
