2007/2008 head unit in 2006 Mustang, Will it work? How does the AUX input function?
I'm looking at putting a 2007/2008 head unit in my 2006 for an AUX input, but I have questions:
1) Is the head unit compatible? I am aware that configuration data will need to be transferred to the new unit.
2) Are there outboard electronics for the AUX, or is it just wiring? I've seen that the 3.5mm jack uses part of the main dash harness, but if it's only wiring I can make a jumper harness from the back of the head unit to the 3.5mm input.
3) My car has the single CD unit. Is a 2007/2008 Shaker compatible with my car?
4) What's the difference between a coupe head unit and the convertible unit?
5) Foresee any other problems?
Yes, I know that:
A) there are aftermarket solutions for an AUX input adapter for my 2006, but they seem to cause serious electrical problems. Also, I don't need the Ipod controls on the head.
B) aftermarket head units are "better", but I like the factory unit just fine, except for the AUX thingy. Less theft, speed volume, big buttons.

In case anyone stumbles on my question, the folks in the following post did just what I asked about.

I know on the shaker 500 there are three different electrical connections.
One (the biggest one) is for the CD unit, one is for the amps, and the other is for the radio. Plus the antenna. There is NO plug of any kind for the AUX....
It would have been nice to see a port for it, but I really dont need it. The unit plays MP3 cds.... I have three of the six discs as full (700MB) MP3 so I can go a LONG time without having to change out cds

Thanks for the response.
Your Shaker head units actually have the pins for the aux input. I'm just not sure how to make them work. At least for the 05/06 head units the input requires an external electronic box to "talk" to the head unit (the dreaded PIE adapter et al). I'm hoping that the 07+ units are already "programmed" so that I can just wire into the head unit.
I'm pretty sure that I have all the necessary wiring to use the Shaker in my non Shaker car. I'm not gonna pull it apart to look until I have a better idea about how well it will work.
The MP3 CD thing seems OK, just not as convenient as my Sansa. We're using several Sansas on my wife's truck and that's pretty slick.

Since I have an 06, I dont have the wiring that the 08's have, therefore I didnt see a "port" for the aux input. Makes perfect sense that its already in the harness... I suppose that IF I wanted it bad enough, I could always run a couple wires in the console and hook it up like stock..
Do us a favor and detail just how you tapped into the main harness to run your wires...
Sorry for the slow response- I've been out of town.
Just to clear up a little confusion, I have not actually tapped into the main harness. If I were to try, it would be pins 1/2 and 9/10 in the attachment.

I dont know if that shaker 500 pinout belongs to a 2006 Mustang. According to the pinout I have for the 2006 Mustang the pinout wiring do not match. The pinout for the 2007 is basically the same.
Cheers Al

The 2006 Mustang has 3 plug in connectors.
#1 Is the main power and speaker connections
#2 Is the MS CAN aux and external input
#3 Is the amps for the shaker500
The # 2, 16 pin plug is the one you would be concerned with.
Pin #1 Auxillary left Positive Pin #8 Audio in left Negative
Pin #2 Auxillary left Negative Pin #9 Auxillary right Positive
Pin #3 N/C Pin #10 Auxillary right Negative
Pin #4 N/C Pin #11,12,13 N/C
Pin #6 Audio in right Positive Pin #14 Audio in right Negative
Pin #7 Audio in left Positive Pin #15 and #16 MS-CAN
You should only have 15 and 16 hooked up on you 2006 Mustang.
Hope this helps.

Thanks data174! Good stuff.
I think it's a good sign that Ford changed the hardware of the head unit enough to change the pinouts- maybe they changed the electronics so that the aux input can work without using an outboard electronic box.

You have to remember that ford wired the 2007 and 2008 with the sirius tuner on the auxillary wires, and the ipod connections in the center console to the audio wires. Unfortunately the plug on the 2005 and 2006 mustangs are not wired for the sirius tuner and the ipod plug in the center console. If you have the single disk unit then you apparently don't have the prewired third plug for the amps.

After checking out the wiring in my 2006, the wiring loom for my base stereo does not have the connector for the subwoofers. Even so, I took a chance and bought a Shaker 1000 for a 2007 convertible off ebay. I'll keep y'all informed once I try the install (probably next weekend). In the meantime, I have a few items that I need to know.
1) Can anyone confirm a part number for the adapter for the antenna?
2) Can anyone suggest a source for the subwoofer connector to attach to the Shaker? I'd like to plug in and run my own wiring to my Alpine subwoofer amp.
3) Do I have to use the Shaker subwoofer outputs? My sub setup uses a splice into the rear speaker level outputs off the base head unit. If the Shaker outputs to the non-sub speakers are full range, then I could leave my existing wiring as is. I'd still like to use the Shaker's line-level outputs if I can get the connector.

The install mostly works- I can hear my mp3 thru the Shaker 1000. However, even with my mp3 volume maxed, input levels on my Aux/"LINE" are too low and hissy. I wired this to the "MS CAN aux and external input" connector on the head unit as follows:
R+ to pin 6
L+ to pin 7
L- to pin 8
R- to pin 14
I'm pretty sure that I have a wiring problem. Suggestions?
I had typed up a more complete writeup, but the forum logged me out and lost my writeup. I'll try again later.

It works! 2007 head unit and AUX in a 2006
I'll post complete details later. Turns out my problem was that -both- channels of my previous extension wiring had shorts.
Replaced the wiring and it works like a champ.
