whiter bulbs for headlights

Does anyone know of what would be a good headlight bulb to get if I want a whiter and brighter light? Other than a HID kit, I am wondering what might be some alternatives with just replacing the bulbs?

What would be the closest thing to HID?

Silver Stars - I've switched them into every vehicle I've owned for the last 10 years, except the Raptor (factory HIDs).

If you are going to spend money for better lighting, why not just go HID? We have a great kit for $89.99 and it's easy to install.

If you have any questions, please shoot me a PM...HIDs are a big improvement over any halogen bulb

I've got a set of Silver Star Ultras in my car that I put in after I took out my HID kit. They'll never be as white as HID, but they're definitely better than stock, and a lot brighter.

I'm not going to get into it on this thread, but simply installing xenon bulbs (with associated ballasts) into your factory housings isn't the ideal solution. I'll leave you to do a search because its a hot-button issue on every forum I've been on and I don't want it hijacking this thread.

Thanks for your feedback. I think I will get the Silver Star Ultras as well because I am just looking for a whiter and brighter bulb. HID's are too bright for me and I hate it when guys drive behind me with them on.......so I am not going to do it to others. Plus you can buy Silver Star Ultras off Ebay for less than $30 shipped.

Those people you see driving around with the blinding lights are probably using a 55w HID ballast.

We only sell 35W, which is plenty bright and doesn't have the same heat-related issues as a 55W kit. I've had our 6000K kit on my car for a while now and nobody has gotten angry with me over excessive light output. Don't get me wrong, our kits are bright, but not bright to the point where people are going to give you the finger on the road.

I understand there are a lot of misconceptions about HID lighting out there, but as always I'm here to answer any lighting related questions.

Thanks!

I ended up buying some Phillips X treme power light bulbs and they were no brighter than OEM. I bought these only because people were saying on the reviews they outlast the silverstars.

Anyone else who has used silverstar ultras and can attest they are worth the money?

Don't want to throw another $35 bucks away.

Did you really notice a significant difference in the brightness of the bulbs? Are they also more white looking?

Luckily, I still have my stock and reg Silverstars so I could do a comparison. For all of these pics, the passenger side bulb is the Silverstar Ultra. I put the camera in manual mode and adjusted the shutter speed to darken each photo so you could see the difference in brightness.

1st up, Stock vs Silverstar Ultra:
1/800th sec
Low Beam

High Beam:

And a reference shot from the front so you can see the difference in color:

And now Silverstar vs Silverstar Ultra. Theres a lot smaller of a difference here, both in color and brightness. I think the Silverstar Ultras trade a little bit of the whiteness for overall output. The regular silverstars are slightly whiter to the naked eye.

I had to step up the shutter speed to 1/1000th of a sec to do a better job of showing the difference in brightness:

Low Beam

High Beam

Both variants of Silverstars are a lot whiter than stock, but there's no mistaking them for HID. This is a pic I took when I swapped my HID's (barely got out of a ticket for glare) out for the Silverstar Ultras

Thanks for posting all the pics. They are very helpful and have convinced me to buy the Silverstar Ultras. In fact, I just ordered them off Amazon!

In that last pic here is that a comparison of your HIDs versus OEM?

Is the difference for the Silverstars versus OEM more noticeable in person or in your pics?

Thanks again for posting all of these.
