Ugly Hood Scoops

Well, the scoop costs $500 and I do agree that it resembles the 99-04 scoop. I tried to get better pics from the side but camera phone, what are you gonna do? I also asked the salesman what they thought about it, and he told me that basically they are proud to be the first dealership in St. Louis to do that. I told him that I hope they are also the last. He actually thought it looked good. The worst part was that the GT's faux hood scoop was actually crooked by about an inch and a half to two inches. If you looked at the car head on, you could see one wiper fluid nozzle while the other was obscured by the scoop. It was terrible.

Personally I hate it when dealerships put crap on their cars. This past April when I bought my Honda Pilot, there was a shortage of Pilots for awhile and the exact color combo I wanted was on the showroom floor with all kinds of "Pimpalicious" crap on it.
Tinted Windows, Brush Guards, Gold Emblems, 20 inch Chrome Plated Rims, Plastic Woodgrain, Running Boards, Fender Flares...... It could of been mine for a cool $36,000. The only thing missing were dingleberries hanging from the top of the front window sill!
No thanks...I waited 8 weeks and got mine for $27,500.

Look at the 1999-2004. The original '99-00 GT & '99-02 V6 un-scooped hood looks horrible !! When they added the scoop to the Aniversary model, that was a BIG improvement for this particular hood. The Mustang public agreed ... Ford and the aftermarket have since sold tons of these scoops, with Ford finally making it std. on the GT in 2001.
Typical dealer thinking is scoops & spoilers help sell cars. In this case, the dealer obviously did not put a whole lot of thought into their decision before they basically ruined these cars ... well, the hoods anyway.
Funny thing is, the typical buying public will not notice that the scoop does not fit the car very well or that it is not properly centered ... they just want the scoop !! Probably 1 out of 10 cars/trucks on the road has an owner (or dealer) applied hood scoop or spoiler and at least half of these installations look bad or wrong on the particular vehicle.

Actually, after revisiting the pics a few times, I don't necessarily 'hate' them like I did when I first saw them. And in some respects, I honestly think they don't look too bad. 
However, I definitely DON'T think the dealer should put them on every car. Maybe one so the public could see what they think? But to mount them arbitrarily and then add in the exorbitant money I'm sure they're charging for the "Dealer Add-on" (most likely 2x what they have in them - at least!), it's just criminal.
I'm sure the bottom line is what they can charge for the option justifies - to the dealer - putting them on in the first place.
And of course, the dealer (and his lackey sales staff) HAS to say "They look GREAT!" - if they said their honest opinion ("They stink!"), what customer would give the car a second look?
Don't you just hate it when dealers add that crap on?!
EDIT: I must have missed the post about the price - $500. GOOD GRIEF! :shock: For a piece of plastic that is most likely pop riveted in place? Unbelievable! :bang:

The old "3M tape trick" - not even a cost of actually 'mounting' a scoop involved! Plus, I'm sure dealers can buy those faux scoops for less than the $279 price, too.
They're making a good $300 bucks on those scoops. What a deal!

Taking these 2 posts together, does this mean that 2001-2004 Mustangs with fake hood scoops are "rice"?

Wow, I guess '69 Mach Is and various Shelbys are rice with those fake side scoops. Which means all those 2005 Shelby photoshops with the fake quarter scoops are rice too. Depending on your defenition of rice, the factory spoiler on the '05 could be rice because it's an appearance item that has zero performance benefits.
I like to keep the word "rice" for things much more over the top. To me, rice means making a car that is NOT fast, look fast. If you have the performance to back it up, you can have all the wings and scoops you want. Oh, and I don't care for that hood scoop either, but the hood does need something.

The stock hood is probably the most beautiful hood ever put on a stang. Most scoops on older mustangs did actually do something. The shelby side scoops pulled air over the rear spoiler.
