TPMS sensors - absolutely necessary?

I've found a few guys selling 17" Mustang GT takeoff rims & tires on Ebay, but some of these don't have the TPMS sensors. What happens if you put these wheels on without the sensors? Would they just trigger an annoying dash light? Is it worth buying the sensors (unless they're expensive) and dismounting the tires to install?

Edit - OK, shoulda done a search on this before posting a new thread. It sounds like the worst you'd have to deal with is an intermittent TPMS light on the dash without the sensors?
