Tires to match 20's

Ok guys since I'm completly retarded when it comes to tire sizes, please help me out.

I'm going to order 20x8.5 on the front and 20x10.5 on the rear but I have no idea what tire to go with. I found a almost brand new set of 305/50R20s But I'm thinking that is just going to be to big. Will those fit? Up front I was looking at a used set of 255/35R20... I need some help here

305/50R20? You're gonna be about 7 inches too tall...

305/25R20 is going to be about as close as you could get.

Even 255/35R20 is going to be tall. 255/30R20 will come closer to stock.

Use this nifty calculator and try to get the new tire size as close to the same height as stock

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

255/35/20 is a nearly exact match for the front, actually .2 inches shorter

I typoed something into the calculator I was using.

27.2" is the correct height. I was at 26 for some reason.

yeah, 255/35R20 looks good.

305/50R20 is still way off...

I believe the middle number is the size of the sidewall, as a percentage of the width.

Which, if I am correct, is so extremely odd...but standard.

The middle number is the size of the sidewall being shown as a % of the first number...

For Example: 100/50/20zr - That means the width of the tire is 100mm - The side wall is 50% of the 100mm or 50mm - the 20 being the diameter of the tire (IE: Rim Size 17,18,20etc) - and the Zr refers to the speed rating of the tire where Zr is safe at 186+ mph

Yes I get the middle number is a % I just dont see the reason behind it. It just makes it a little confusing, but anyway I think I've got it down now

Here is exactly what you need. With 10.5 rears these are the best tire because you will have a mean wide patch in the rear.. Toyo proxes 4 (they are also m+s rated)

255-35-20 front
295-30-20 rear

Actually the Nitto 285 30 R20 has a wider contact patch than the 295 Toyos and MUCH better traction. You have to look at tread width in addition to size as it varies from brand to brand as does actual height.

Thats what I'm thinking but the problem is the wheels I'm looking at only go up to a 10" width.... I think I saw 295s on a 10" and it lookd pretty good

My rears are 10" with 295's. Here is a better pic. I think the Toyos look great. As to the previous post regarding the Nittos, I don't own Nitto or Toyo Corp. so whichever tire you get the money will not be going in my pocket. Just merely stating they look great on 10" wheels, in my opinion and just about everybody else that has seen them. I got 555's on my SUV, they are great too.
