For those who have cut into their hood...

How hard was it and what is most important when doing it? Any recommednations or how-to's?

A friend of mine is going to sell me his stock hood for cheap, and I'm thinking of buying some heat extractor vents to put on it. Has anyone done this mod yet?

Any help would be appreciated...

PS: I;m looking to do something like this or similar...

I cut my hood to install the shaker........ here's what I found to be helpful:

-make sure you tape off the area very well to avoid scratching the paint around it
-use a razor knife to trace the cut out that you want to make and make sure when you trace it, you cut into the paint with the knife. That way, there will be a line there already so when you use a saw to go through the metal, the paint is less likely to chip
-use a very high quality blade, with a high TPI count. I tried many cheap blades first and it sucked. I literally went thru like 6 of them in the first couple of minutes. I ended up buying like a DeWalt 32TPI blade, and it cut through the rest of the hood like butter. Spend the money for a quality blade! I used a jigsaw for the cutting.

Yup what Tom said. Make sure you have a good blade and a good jig saw. Mine cut through the hood like a hot knife through butter. No problems at all.

Well this is my next mod and plan on doing it Sunday.
I will be using the following:
DeWALT DW331K Jig Saw
DeWALT DW3726 24TPI Metal Cutting Blade.

This should do the trick.
Any tips on centering the template?
I already found the center of the hood while laying the stripes.

Dont drink too much caffine before and its all good. And one more thing, if it hurts to look while you cut, just close your eyes.

As silly as this may sound, the best advice I can give you is to not let the nervousness get to you. Go about it calmly and confidentally and you'll be fine.

WAY off topic, but Daryl I think that pic in your avatar would look so cool if you had the hood up. Not only would you be able to see the shaker (once you install it) but it would show more of the white stripes. Just a thought because I like your avatar and the way you have your name lined up.

Thanks.
I might try that. At the time that pic was taken there were no stripes on the hood.
