tail light mod but not a sequential kit
tail light mod but not a sequential kit
Here is an inexpensive mod I just completed on my car. I activated the inboard bulbs of our tail lights to work with the parking lights (like stock, on the minor filament) and also work with the brake light circuit on the major filament. The tricky part was that with my modification, that inboard light does NOT light with the turn signals or flashers. That would have made it too easy.
Here is a teaser video of the completed modification...

For detailed intructions, I have a "How-To" posted in the following forum...

Yeah, that was an unintended result. I have noticed that the third brake lights on most cars do seem to come on an instant before the corner brake lights.
I don't know, it still looks like the turn signal bulbs are burnt out. I installed new light sockets and wired them into the existing lights and have all 3 light on each side working. All 3 work with the turn signals, brake lights and driving lights. I would film it for you but I am moving around on crutches at the moment.
Here's the part number.

I could not find these in the store but was able to order online. $5.61 each

This is an old modification that I had done long ago on both of my former Mustangs, the 1994 Convertible with 1996 Taillamps, and the 1999 Coupe. I have recently done this with my new 08 Pony.
The way I worked mine is I switched the center socket and bulb with the inner socket so that section #1 & #3 light up with the turn signal and brake lamp. Then I got a dual function bulb and socket for the #2 section and wired it to the 3rd brake lamp circuit.
During braking all three sections on both sides light up. During a turn signal with a flashing taillamp, sections 1 & 3 flash while section 2 stays lit while applying brakes.
Caught the left turn signal flash in a pic:

Traditionally on 1971-78 Mustangs, #1 and #3 lit up during braking and turn signals. On 1971-73, the center section was the back up lamp. One 1974-78, the center section had an amber turn signal with a back-up lamp integrated below.
The arrival of the 1996 taillamps with a bulb in each section made it perfect for those that loved the classic sequential taillamps of Thunderbirds, Shelby's and Cougars. All three classic cars used lamp housings and lenses that originated from the 1964 Tbird with only variations in the out bezel trim, or trim deleted.
One thing I did not make clear was that on my 08 model I just switched the position of the bulbs. I have yet to replace the socket in the center section with a two-way bulb and socket wired into the 3rd brake lamp circuit like I did my 94 and 99 models. The neat thing about tying in the center section into the 3rd brake lamp is that when the brakes are applied, the center sections stay lit while sections 1 & 3 flash during a turn signal when activated while the opposite lamp not flashing shows all three lit.
I don't know why it always bothered be that from the factory only sections 1 and 2 (center) lit up. It seemed out of balance compared to classic models.
One day if I get bored with extra money to throw away I may do the sequential thing. I have higher priorities right now as I woudl like to get GT500 aluminum pedals and Shelby strips. The rest of my planned mods are insignificant.
