so my mustang will finally be here this week and not soon after its here the dealer will be sending it for its stripes. now i've felt stripes where you can feel the edges (painted) and stripes that were totally smooth. the difference is an extra grand worth of work to have everything that has been striped sanded and clear coated again. My question is, is it really worth the extra grand? my only concern would be something chipping along the edges but is that even possible?

I would say if your going with paint do it right and get it sanded and re-clear coated.
Thats why I went with vinyl first, cost concerns, once I save enough I will probably get the paint.

is there really a right way though? This isnt some fly by night paint shop. they actually do all the custom paintwork for galpin. they did the red and white one that was at the LA autoshow this year and in that one you could feel the stripes. from what i heard the more they stripe the better they are getting with techniques on how to make that edge less harsh on the hand.

I use the term right loosly. I think if its going to be paint, make it appear to be part of the original so its 100% smooth. Just a personal preference I guess. I just think it overall looks better
I checked into paint myself at a shop and it was about the same difference as you mention, about 7-800 with just the stripes and clearcoat on them, and an extra 1k to reclear all the needed surfaces etc etc..

exactly. i think that since i'm having the stripes dealer requested instead of getting it done myself it maybe cheaper even.

I would only spend that kind of money if the car was going to be a nice weather driver only.......and had another vehicle as my every day mode.

I chose to spend the extra money and get mine clear coated, sanded, and buffed. It was well worthe the extra money in my opinion.

I felt that the edges might chip over time as the paint will not stick to the non-sanded paint surface. It would be impossible to completely sand up to the edge of the tape( might could sand blast I guess ). The edge might allow moisture to get in and in freezing weather...guess what....

I love mine and for a grand I'll live with a slight edge.
You cant even tell unless you run your hand over it.
