Shorty antenna
Shorty antenna
I found a cheap way to get a shorty antenna. Go to Advance Auto and buy a universal black antenna. It looks just like the factory antenna with the spiral wire. Measure it at 14 inch from the base and snip it off with a pair of cutters. Put the remaining piece with the ball in a vise, wrap the ball end with a rag and pull it off with a pair of pliers. Comes off real easy and the rag prevents it from getting scratched by the pliers. I then glued the ball to the antenna with 409 Loctite (basically super glue). Install it on the car and you have a nice shorty antenna that looks so much better than the stock fishing rod lenth antenna. Now you can save your stock antenna if you ever want to put it back on. I had about $11 in it including tax and it took only 5 minutes to modify and install.

I removed the ball at the top of the antenna by putting a plastic bag around it, pliers below it and hitting it with a hammer. I cut about 12" off the stock antenna with a dremel tool making it about 19" tall and glued the ball back on with silicone II. The whole operation took 5 minutes.
