Shorty Antenna
Can anyone give me a good write up on how to cut your factory antenna to lets say 14 or 8 in. cause Mustang tuning is charging too much for a shorty antenna ($18) and i know it is easy to do i just do not want to do it with out some directions, thanks in advance

I used my Dremel with a cut-off disc/wheel. I imagine you could use a hacksaw. I then filed down the cut off end and drilled out the ball slightly as the antenna seemed a bit thicker. Then epoxied the ball back on. I popped the ball off the original length using the claw end of a hammer. I'd suggest removing the antenna to do the work, one slip & you've scratched the paint.

FYI...the 14" Black Short antenna creates a interior whistle sound, similar to wind/air leak in the windshield trim. The reason the stock antenna has a spiral like shaft is to eliminate this sound. Guess how I know.....want to buy a new/used 14" antenna ?

to get the ball off, put it in a vice, or some way to hold it real good and use a wrench to slide to "whack" the ball off.... I put a sock over the ball and slid it down, put the wrench on part of the sock and just started sliding up and down till the ball came off in the sock.. easy enough.

Here is a good write-up on how to cut the stock antenna and why it is important to keep it a certain length for reception. I cut mine exactly in half. It follows the roof line nicely! And reception is just as good as it was.

The spiral wrapped antenna can be shortend just as easily as the solid ones. Just did mine last night for the new 07. The ball is pressed on the tapered end of the shaft. You need to use a file and taper the new end after cutting then tap the ball back on with a small hammer. Takes about 10 minutes total.

dang. i've got one already ordered--after being indifferent about the size of the antenna, i finally ordered one. i never anticipated a whistle. does anyone remember the day when antennas were built into the window glass?

Anyone want a 1/2 inch antenna? When the Mustang is first delivered to the dealership there is a 1/2 metal plug in the antenna mount. This piece is generally unscrewed and thrown away when the antenna is installed. It kind of think it looks cool.
Just ask your dealership's service dept to save you one the next time they PDI a Mustang.

Just Cut the Original One. Have been doing in ALL my Mustangs. Just looks so out of place being so tall above the roof line.
It's a piece of cake, as told by the others above. And it looks great on the car as well. It belongs short (as long as it has to be there)
Save your $$$ for mod's you NEED to buy.

Just a small dab of any adhesive will work. On both my Mach1 and my 07, I only used the touch up paint. Just pushed the ball back on while the paint was tacky. Works fine.
