Removing Spoiler

Hey Everyone,

I recently joined and have been lurking the past few weeks reading up. So i picked up a 2007 Shelby GT a few months back and am loving it. That said, it was a certified pre-owned vehicle that had 900 miles on it. I was able to get it for a really nice discount. One thing the previous owner did was put the GT spoiler on. I'm not a huge fan of it and would like to remove it. Does anyone know of a place I could buy plugs to fill the holes the mounting of the spoiler left? I'd prefer to have the car like its supposed to be fresh from Shelby Autos. Thanks for your input!

Moved to exterior mods section. Give the search feature a try. You will find lots of posts regarding spoiler removal and ways to fill/cover the holes.

Jared;

If it were me, I'd replace the decklid or get a GT500 wing. IMO, plugging exterior spoiler holes just doesn't look right.

Yea, i've been thinking about that. But how would I go about the stripes? They are supposed to go over the wing right? Would I need to buy new ones? Thanks for the help fellas!

Yup, you would need to get additional tape. More work but well worth it.

The stripes are just vinyl. You can just buy a kit, or get a sign shop to cut just what you need to redo the spoiler. You might want to look at some pics that show plugs being used. Personally I think plugs look worse than leaving the spoiler on.

They are not called plugs. They are called panel/trim retainers(Made out of plastic).About a $1.50 for 4
Similar to these CLICK HERE
They can be found at any automotive part store in miscellanies part.(Pep boys)
They have them in white gloss which will match your car perfectly.

Things you will need:
1. 3M adhesive remover, Highly recommended it, Can be bought online. (for removing excess residue left from spoiler)
wd40, blow dryer, alcohol, exct, doesn't work well and it's a waste of time.

2.Thin fishing line, dental floss will work too just double it.

3.Clear pluming silicone for the plugs to prevent water from getting in.
Any home store will carry this.

Congrats on the new car ,looks great except for the spoiler.LOL

Post some pics if you decide to go thru with it.
Good luck,

and one last thing, spoilers are:gay:!!!

Call them what you want TTS197, but panel/trim retainers (aka plugs) look worse than spoilers. It just screams (IMO) I am too cheap to do this mod properly. Something I guess might be acceptable on a ricer but I have not seen a mustang yet that I liked that had them on there. I didn't even say anything and my wife (who is not a car person) asked why someone would do something so dumb looking to a mustang when she saw one at a car show.

Get the GT500 wing.
If I had bought off the lot, that's what I would have done.
Even the new V6 wing looks better that the stock GT wing IMO.

Agreed. Bought this car used so, it was already on. Its the stripe thing that is annoying though. I don't want to shell out even more for new stripes on back. But i do dislike the spoiler quite a bit. I'll keep you guys posted.

you'll be spending more money no matter what. There is always something you'll want to change. It's a disease we all have

I guess you missed the at the end.

If I recall correctly the op asked where to get the plugs/rivet/retainers/, not what he should do or what would be the right thing to do, which would be to take it the body shop and have the holes filled and color matched.
I guess you and I don't share the same meaning for rice:
Last time I checked ricers where adding non factory spoilers, winglets, body kits that serve no aerodynamic purses, and coffee cans for exhaust. Which basically are non-functional to their vehicles.
Are there a few item out there that can be tastefully done? Yes, but that's for another discussion all together.
(IMO) The plugs/rivet/retainers/ are a quick, easy, and functional fix that can also look right if done properly.

If you do decide to go with the GT500 spoiler, they have some on ebay already painted. I suggest making an offer for $80 and you just might be happy with the response.
GT500 Spoiler
I'm sure you can find the vynil to go over the spoiler for under $20 just do a search or ask around.

GOOD LUCK !!!

I did it to mine and I am happy with it for now. IMHO a huge improvement over the stock spoiler. I might be going GT500 spoiler in the future, but leaning more to just having them filled. The plug is a great way to see if you like the look. Here are a couple of pics.

I went with the GT500 wing. I have BSM stripes and when I ordered them, I ordered some extra vinyl to go over the GT500 wing which I didn't buy until months after I put the stripes on. Striping the wing is pretty easy, then again, I did the whole car myself. GT500 wing looks MUCH better than the GT wing.

I think on a white car, black plugs would just stand out too much.
