Removing the Pony Package Grille

Hey guys and dolls,

I'm thinking about taking the Pony Package grille off my 07 in order to put some chrome trim around it. How difficult is this to do? Does removing the grille require removal of the front bumper? Also, I've taken the radiator shroud off of my stang and looked at the back of the grille and saw how the grille is held in by clips. How does one remove the clips without breaking them? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks and Best Wishes,

James

I have done this...

It's very easy to remove! First you remove the push-pin fastners that hold the black valance panel on top of the grille which encircles the hood latch. Just pull up the center of the fastners with a small screw driver. Remove the panel. Next unplug the fog lamps. After that just pull the grille forward. The grille has tabs that engage in slots in the bumper cover fascia around the inside of the grille opening. They will come loose, however you may need to wedge a screwdriver between the grille tabs and the slots in the fascia to gently dislodge them.

Do you really need to take the grille out to put the chrome on? What chrome did you get?
Anyway, no the bumper does not need to come off. The grille comes out like in the above post. I only differ in saying that it's not 'easy'. It's kind of a pain in the butt to get started and get the first couple of clips to give way. You just got to keep persistant and be careful. Also be careful when removing the grille to not scratch the bumper. Put a towel between the grill and bumper when taking it out... but then again - if you can get a towel in there you probably don't need to remove the grille to get the chrome on - depending on what chrome you're going with. Good luck.

dead poet, i removed my grille on the gt and put on the v6 pony package grille. i ended up putting the chrome trim like you are planning. very nice and cheap mod imo! like ocd said, put a towel around the bumper. actually, what i did was put painter's tape around the perimeter of the grille.

i dont think it is ABSOLUTELY necessary to remove the grille, but i tried with the grille on, and it was taking forever! so took the grille off again and the trim went on very easily. plus it was less painful on the fingertips. taking it off is definitely the way to go imho.

once you remove the radiator cover, the hardest part is removing the first clip. i used two screwdrivers i believe for that. used one to press in the retaining tab on the bumper, and the other to press on the tab of the grille.

once you get the top one off, the next one below comes off easier. to get to the bottom ones, i reached my hand through the lower grille opening and i (think) pushed up (or pulled down.. try pulling down first. sorry short term memory) on the tabs one by one along the bottom edge. once all the other tabs are off, the last two of the other edge came off pretty easy. anyways, good luck with your mod.
