removing my side stripes?
removing my side stripes?
hey everyone i was thinking of removing the side stripes i have on my 06 black gt. What is the best way of doing this and will there possibly be any paint fading where is was and wasnt. has anyone done this?
I took off the stripes on the trunk of my friends car in order to put a spoiler on. I am not sure if your side stripes are the same material but his pulled right off with no heat or anything. They left a tiny bit of gunk where the edges were, but a quick wipe with some alcohol took it right off.
Depends on the temperature outside. I suggest that you do NOT use a heat gun. Heat guns generate a lot more heat than what is necessary to remove vinyl. Just use a hairdryer to warm up the vinyl. Start at one end. While pulling the vinyl up and away from the paint, slowly move the hairdryer along the area that is still stuck to the car. You should be able to remove it in one piece and without any major issues. If there is any adhesive left, use goo-gone to get rid of it. WD40 also works. Whatever you use, you need to wash the car after to get rid of any remaining chemicals that are on the paint.
As for fading, paint cannot fade underneath the stripe since it is not exposed to UV, scratches, etc. If you do see a difference in the paint, basically that just means you need to polish the panel to get rid of the imperfections in that paint that were not protected under the vinyl. There is a huge misconception that vinyl causes paint to fade.
Any other questions regarding vinyl removal let me know. I use to work in the sign industry to make a living
