A Question of Taste - Would Like Your Opinion

I'm working on a '67 shelby gt 350 tribute project. To each his own, but personally, I'm in the camp that doesn't like to see inaccurate badges (like "boss" or "mach 1" on a standard S197 GT). I'm trying to decide what to do with my rocker panel stripes.

On the one hand, my car is not a shelby gt 350, so I don't love the idea of putting "GT 350" there. On the other hand, I do want to recreate the look of the '67 (pictured below for reference). So I'm trying to decide how to handle that detail.

One idea I had initially was doing "GT 350 TR" or "GT 350 TRB" with the "TR" or "TRB" standing for Tribute. For the 99% of non-enthusiasts out there, I'm sure they wouldn't notice one way or another, and for the 1% of enthusiasts that ask me, I can explain. I wouldn't want it mistaken for "Turbo," though, which obviously its not.

What do you think - like it? hate it? other ideas? I have a poll...

Thx!

I've been mulling over that very same question in regards to a possible 68 Shelby tribute. I was considering just going with GT in the side stripe, and then replacing the GT fender emblems with something else. Possibly the "Powered By Ford" emblems as they'll cover the holes and should be a retro feel without posing. This truly retro style one, or the newer ones used on the Shelby GT, as they've got a good feel and they're not Shelby/Cobra exclusive imagery. I'm going to avoid putting ANY cobras on it, or anything that says Shelby as it's neither a Shelby, nor a cobra of any type.

There's also the idea of using GT350 because, well, there is no GT350 currently, so you shouldn't REALLY be mistaken for one. At least not by anyone that knows anything about current mustangs. For that though, I'd say you'd have to be true to the GT350 name and have the suspension and power to back it up. Stuff like intake/tune/headers higher performance shocks etc. etc. Again, avoid any actual Shelby icons.

Of the options you have listed, though, I voted for GT300 just in case this is purely a cosmetic deal. And again advise staying away from actual Shelby/Cobra icons.

If it's for visual cues, I voted to just stripe it with no lettering. Gives you the effect without the hassle of explaining

I agree with Mike.

I voted just a simple stripe. Those who know about the GT350 will recognize its a tribute and those who don't will appreciate the stripe without wondering what the letters are for. I just don't think even a GT350 tribute should have GT350 or GT300 on it. It's just my opinion. If you did do it I certainly wouldn't be offended by it, it's just personal taste I guess.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I did find a good picture of the plain stripe, which I like, because I don't like the idea of removing the original GT emblem (and I personally detest the look of "GT 350" or whatever underneath a GT emblem - way too redundant and busy!)

Would appreciate any further thoughts...

I would move the stripe lower than the one you have pictured maybe right above the rocker like the original 67 cars

Thanks for the ideas. I've looked, but I can't find a picture of a car with the rocker stripe lower, its pretty universally along the door indentation/hockey stick line. If anyone has a good example, I'd appreciate seeing it. I did photochop the above photo, and it seemed to look ok, but a real-life picture would be good.

I'm also in the camp of hating when a car has emblems that identify it as something that it is not. Plain stripe, or have a custom stripe made with something else on it.

I was in a rush to stripe my car when I got it. I put GTR500 on mine and have had to explain it quite often. The plan was to supercharge it, but that just has not happened. Yet.

So, I would like to change it. Not sure which way to go. I have made some sketches of various ideas, and I keep coming back to the one pictured below. I can't find my original, so it is just a quick sketch...

Hey Chris! (for the benefit of others, I ended up buying the twin to Chris' custom notch-less Mystery 7 hood, which is a '67 design that fits perfectly on the S197s; it was seeing Chris' car that inspired my own project).

Nice ideas/designs, Chris and willie. I like those, very cool. I never even though about that. hmmmmm

Nah, not yet, I've just bought it, but it either still hasn't been shipped or its being shipped right now. Still needs to get painted and installed, along with a bunch of other work that I'm gonna have done at the same time, so unfortunately pics are at least several weeks off. However, once its done, I won't be shy.

That's a great hood and I have no idea what Fang was thinking with those notches. It's on the top of my hoods list I would consider putting on my car.

If I remember correctly GT350Clone on VMF said people would give him crap at first when he told them it was not a real GT350. Once they saw the stripe close they were like "Oh well okay then."
