Question PIAA Driving Lights - Who Has Installed Them?

I'm looking for someone who has installed the PIAA 3064 driving light kit. These supposedly replace the factory GT fog lamps.

I'd like to know if this kit is plug and play. Can I use the factory fog lamp harnesses, plugs and switch? Are any other modifications necessary?

One of my factory fog lamps had the black diffuser thingy fall off. I'd like to replace the fog lamps with something of better quality.

Thanks

I don't have them, but there is a least one member who does.
I made my own kit out of Hella 500s:

Mine cost me $50.
Either way you have to pull off the front bumper cover to pull the grill out properly.

Ragtop,

I can't help you with the Hella's as I did the Golf III driving light upgrade instead (Pony Express's mod). If you want to wire them up "correctly" (aka: you can control them with the factory fog light switch and have high/low beam control), read this post I made: http://forums.bradbarnett.net/showpo...3&postcount=33

These cars are pretty much all electronic, so you can't just tap off the fog light switch and go. It will **** of the smart junction box faster than you could believe. And THAT will make your car act very much like it is possessed...

If you have any electronics skill, that post will tell you what you need to know to build a simple interface circuit that will allow you to tap into the fog light (and flash to pass if you want) circuit WITHOUT causing any problems with the SJB. If you are interested, I could post a schematic that could get you going.

But did you ever get the light on the dash to work?

I appreciate all of the input so far. All I want to do is replace the existing fogs with something better. I'm not looking to re-wire the car. Just something that plugs in like the factory ones do. PIAA makes a kit to mount their fog lights on the GT. I'm just trying to find out if it is plug compatible with the existing harness.

Of course I did! It DID take the Rev 1 version of the interface circuit to make it work, but it DID all work. I still can't believe just how TOUCHY that SJB is. The Rev 0 circuit had about 50k ohms of resistance on it, but it was STILL enough to pull down the input on the SJB.

You're right about how touchy these SJB's are ! I had a guy at my tire shop call and tell me he had problems starting my car , I assumed he just hadn't pushed the clutch in far enough. So he said he started pushing buttons on my aftermarket alarm , a viper , and then the car started and again I didn't think much about it. Later another guy called to say my car was acting really weird , he said everytime he pushed the clutch in the starter would engage. Of course I couldn't believe this and went over right away and dammed if it wasn't ! It didn't matter if the key was in the ignition or not , the starter would engage if the clutch was pushed in. If the key was in the ignition and in the start position , then the engine would start. Of course you couldn't push the clutch in again to change gears or the starter would engage and grind.

I decided something had to be making the SJB think the ignition key was in the start position, whether it was or not. Then I thought about what the other guy had said about the alarm and realized that to program the brain in the alarm , you put the key in the on position and push a sequence of buttons. I assume when it didn't start he released the key , which would remain in the on position and there is no way of knowing what buttons he pushed and what he did to the alarm brain.

Anyway , we disconnect the switch from the clutch so I could shift after the car started and I took it to the dealer ship. I told then what I thought it was and sure enough when they ripped the alarm out , the car went back to normal. At the tire shop , I had pulled the harness on the alarm and still had the problem. The tech at the dealer said that because all the wires were still connected to the car circuits and grounded , so you still had the problem. I'll be really care about any electronics I have installed in the future ...

Sorry about the long post ...

Another option would be to go with a pair of Angel Eye fogs. Those are plug and play, but I'm concerned they might be ricey. Opinions?

I'm looking at the PIAA driving light kit now, too, and see no one ever answered yes here, so I'll resurrect the thread yet again to see if there's any response.
