I asked my body shop if they could paint my side mirrors and they said no problem, but the mirrors have a texture and you'll be able to see it...the mirrors will be a little more dull than the rest of the paint.

My question is, are you guys sanding the mirrors before painting or just spraying them as-is? Any advice is much appreciated.

Strange. My car was recently hit in the driver side door and the edge of the drivers mirror was scuff up a bit. I asked three different places (one I don't trust and two that are definitely high on the trust scale) that I got quotes at about painting the mirrors.

I got the same response at all three places: "we can paint them and they will look good initially, but due to the texture they WILL peal in time".

I was also wondering about sanding the texture off then prep and paint. That SHOULD take care of the pealing problems, but I am NOT a paint man, so my opinion is worth what you paid for it... Any one with experience (preferably in the paint industry!) with painting this type of plastic and the long term quality?

its plastic no amount of sanding will do it. It's in the mixture that they use to Paint it.

packhater,

Does that mean that they CAN paint them and they will last?

Has anyone seen a aftermarket replacement that comes ready to be painted? Or even one from ford that would fit? I know there are ton's out there for the bmws.

I'm thinking about getting these. They come ready to be painted...

By the way, I have seen numerous posts where people had theirs sanded and painted and came out good. I'm in Germany and another Mustang owner was quoted 350e ($450+) to sand and paint. That's why I'm thinking about the Xenon ones and just have those painted.

There are more but these post have great pics and useful info.

Remeber the Mustang's bumper covers are plastic and there is no problem with the paint sticking to them. It just requires proper preparation. I had my door handles painted on my 1993 Ford Taurus SHO a few years ago with no problems.

No problems with mine, so far. Cost me $125 apiece. As long as its prepped properly, a good shop should be able to match the paint and make it look good. I've only had them painted for a month or so now, so I can't attest to durability, but I have no reason to believe it won't last. No cracking, peeling or anything like that.

Bought a pair of mirrors on Ebay, 75.00/pr with shipping. Painted them this afternoon, about 20.00 for materials. Prep work was straight forward, mask off glass with high quality tape, use degreasing solvent (3M) wiping down complete exterior, lightly scuff housing, wipe second time, air dry, spray 2 or 3 light coats of flexible etching primer (for plastic and bumper covers), scuff and wipe one last time, spray base coat (2-3 light coats depending on color) with plasti-flex additive (used on all plastic and flexible parts) and spray clear with same additive. Have used this method for years on all mods I've done on all my cars, when dealing with plastic/flexible parts. Have never had a problem. I would not waste my money of mirror covers, since you can get a whole mirror assembly for less. Any body shop should be able to do this paint work for 100.00/pr. Took me less than 2 hours, including bake time in oven.
