Painting side mirrors
Upstate here and the mirror's are holding up perfect. No chips no issues. When I told my body shop guy (had for over 20 years) about the concerns expressed about painting the plastic mirrors he laughed. He said all outside mirrors have been plastic for years. Many cars have them painted. Heck the bumpers are urathaine and they flex, so long as you prep correctly and have the proper paint/additives no problem.

David - do you know Jack Frost?? You took a big chance there....for all you know, he does have baby ears.
I'm definitely getting the top half of mine painted when it arrives. I love that look.
A little off topic...dont you think. The question is about paint on the mirrows. Not the size which is fine in my opinion. The reason they are big is because the 05 is a bigger car than the older models. Imagine yourself with the size of baby ears. Would not look right would it. LOL
Back to topic now...I have not painted mine but would like to. You should be able to prime them and get some paint on there for good. Thats what are other Manufactures do is prime the plastic of the mirrow and then paint it. Nothing else special is done from what I understand.
The only thing you will have to worry about is the chips from rocks to where you dont have to worry about that now.

The side mirrors are my only beef with the styling of the car. The only good thing about them is that I can shave in them while driving to work.
Way too big. They're horrible. They look cheap. They ARE cheap.
As soon as I can find some aftermarket mirrors that aren't sooo big, those stinkers are going straight into the trash bin.

I've got to be honest: I thought the mirrors were too big at first. But, especially with the big blind spots, I think they are great. I used to have some little aftermarket mirrors on my Harley-Davidson. They looked great, but were useless. I put the factory mirrors back on and found them to be too good to scrap for looks.
What's all this talk about blind spots?
What are you guys...like a 100 years old that you need these big shaving mirrors to know whats going on around you while you drive?
I don't remember my dad needing these ridiculous shaving mirrors bolted to the side of his car when he was driving his Galaxy 500, Lincolns or other Ford land yachts.
If you guys are that reliant on your side mirrors that you need them as big as the Hubble telescope mirror...you should be re-evaluating your driving skills.
Developing a sense of 'situational awareness' is far more effective than relying heavily on side mirrors to know what's going on around your car.

I painted my mirrors. Just the top strip. They looks great, I think they look way too big normally. Mirror is totally functional being that big... just not appealing to the eye.
with it painted it plays the illusion that it's smaller... so it works out for everyting.

I was just looking at a side shot of the Mustang (Shelby GT500 to be exact) thinking how it would look w/ painted mirrors, as has been brought up a few times.
IMO, with tinted windows (i.e. black) the original color black mirrors blend in nicely with the window A-pillar lines. From a visual design standpoint, if the mirrors were painted body color, it would take away from the look of the car.
