I have been considering painting my side mirrors. I've seen that a couple of you have already done so. I was at my local dealer having my tires rotated & asked the body shop what they would charge to paint the side mirrors. They said they wouldn't do it because the paint would eventually just peel off.

Have any of you who have had this done experienced any problems???

The side mirrors are my only beef with the styling of the car. The only good thing about them is that I can shave in them while driving to work.

Way too big. They're horrible. They look cheap. They ARE cheap.

As soon as I can find some aftermarket mirrors that aren't sooo big, those stinkers are going straight into the trash bin.

No, I didn't paint my windows. I think they actually give a nicer two tone look to the car. However opinions vary.
They were made so big due to the big blind spots, especially the one on the left side. A small car or especially a motorcycle can be completely hidden. Therefore I like the fact that they are big - I can see better. However, once again opinions will vary.

This should be moved to Exterior Mods. But to answer your question, I haven't heard of anyone regretting it. If the paint was going to start to peel, it would take a while anyway... so not sure if anyone who have gotten theirs painted could even tell you at this point, being so soon.

way too big? they are AWESOME. they are big because of the cars blind spots. the mirrors handle blind spots VERY well when positioned right. Most impressive IMO.

They used to bug me a lot more, not being the color of the car. But since I got my stripes done I don't notice them as much, or the rocker panels either (V6). I think it adds contrast IMHO.

Not too big IMO. Any smaller and I would have side-swiped a million cars so far. Maybe it's my height or something, but I can't see for sh$t without those mirrors.

As far as painting - I havent done it (stang is black) but it seems that if they make paint that can bond to dirty plastixc outdoor furniture - they sure as heck muct have something that will stick to the mirrors.

The mirrors are very functional, that is for sure. And at first I was thinking of painting them the body color, but after putting all the balck accents on my car (black painted brake calipers, black rally and rocker stripes) I like the black mirrors on my car. If you had a white or red car, I can see wanting to paint them. What color is your car, Lou?

The mirrors are great from a functional standpoint. The car has a huge blind spot since the rear side window is useless. I've seen pictures of a redfire painted mirror and I don't like it.

I like the mirrors so much, I had the car orginally painted the same color as the mirrors, so they would match.

I agree, as far as visibility I love the fact that I can see alot in the mirrors without effort.

Its been awhile but someone started a thread who had theirs painted by a shop and they were pleased with it. IMO the prep work before painting them would be the crtical step so they would bond correctly. The mirrors are big but they really serve the purpose, especially if you are in traffic and moving from lane to lane. Personally I like the color.

I want to paint mine, but I only want the top half painted like the picture below. This picture is of TMS member "upstate's" mustang. I think it looks good, but I'm not a fan of getting the entire mirror painted.

too funny! that's the same way I feel about them. If they had mirrors available like the ones tht were on the concept car it would be great. Until something better comes out what is to be done about the oversized Dumbo ear looking mirrors??? I really like the look of the mirror posted by CA Stang. Too be honest though the mirrors really are functional. I'm sure considering the cars design I would be willing to sacrifice style over functionality.

But my car is black. So I figures at least if they were painted it would look better than the cheap appearance of plastic.

I do not see anything wrong with the size of O5's mirrors. In fact I now think the ones on my 98 are too small. As for painting them, to eaches own, I think they look fine either way the owner likes them. Ours will remain unpainted for now. Per the owner.

A little off topic...dont you think. The question is about paint on the mirrows. Not the size which is fine in my opinion. The reason they are big is because the 05 is a bigger car than the older models. Imagine yourself with the size of baby ears. Would not look right would it. LOL

Back to topic now...I have not painted mine but would like to. You should be able to prime them and get some paint on there for good. Thats what are other Manufactures do is prime the plastic of the mirrow and then paint it. Nothing else special is done from what I understand.

The only thing you will have to worry about is the chips from rocks to where you dont have to worry about that now.

That's exactly what I was thinking...sort of like my Lightning mirrors. It would be nice if some vendor would come out with a smooth, paintable "cover" to attach to the top portion of the mirror. An engineer friend commented that the mirrors actually looked like they were designed for it.

I'm also waiting for someone to come out with a painted insert that goes over the top portion of the mirror. The aforementioned area does have a slight indentation that would accomodate an insert. Other Ford vehicles have painted inserts like these; i.e. Expedition.

I'm sure a very basic adhesion promoter sprayed on the plastic would readily accept any automotive paint. I don't think it would be a problem, and I know a lot of people have done similiar things to other Ford products with cheap mirrors *cough* F150 *cough*.

I heard you can order the mirrors any color you want, provided you want either black, onyx, smoke, or ultra dark gray. You know Ford - its always about choices!
