Painting my Calipers with the G2 kit.

I got my G2 caliper paint kit Friday. I'll be painting them sometime later this week. I'll make sure to take plenty of pics. Since I'm planning on doing this soon I was wondering if anyone who's used this kit has any tips or suggestions. Also if anyone knows of any write-ups or threads, even if they're from another forum please post or pm me the links. Thanks in advance.

You might want to search for Adrenalin's <spelling?) step by step on his car as I believe he painted his himself. if not just do a search for painted calipers and I am sure you can find someones how to. I would do it for you but I am feeling a little lazy right now . Happy New Year!

The trick is to get all 4 wheels off. The paint dries very quickly. You may want to separate the paint and hardener into two separate c0ontainers so you can use half first and then use the second half later. It took me about 15 minutes to give each caliper a coat of paint. You have to wait an hour before you can apply the second coat, so coincidently, by the time you finish applying the first coat on the fourth wheel, you can start the second coat on the first wheel. Give it at least 3 coats.

You have to wait at least 24 hours before you can drive the car, so in the mean time, clean the inside of your wheels. Get them as clean as you can, use rubbing compound if necessary. Then, give it a few coats of wax. This will help keep the brake dust from sticking to the wheels and will keep them looking good longer. I clean my wheels and wax them at least twice a year.

I found all the other threads on this forum but none of them were really that detailed. I'll have look for Adrenalin's as his didn't come up when I did my search.

Did you use the G2 kit?

Did you wait a full 24 before putting the wheels back on?

Is your car a daily driver? If so what did you clean your calipers with before painting. How much effort did you really put into cleaning them?
How are they holding up?

This is the thread where he details his mods. Not sure if what you want is in it.

"Afixer" and "TacoBill" made them for me and then I printed them on sticker paper.

easiest way to do it, take off your wheel and use Ford Red engine paint or the color you want, did it on my old V6 and no chipping, fading, or cracking the paint still lasts till this day and i did it in 2003

Hey Leo, I used the G2 kit, and it works terrific. I did wait the 24 hours to drive my car, as per instructions. My car isn't a daily driver, but I do drive it pretty regularly on the weekends. In regards to cleaning the calipers, I used the included cleaner, and got a wire brush. The best thing to do, is to tape off some of the pads, just so you won't get any excess paint on anything you don't want to. As of right now, they look just like powercoated calipers. Everyone comments on the look. Most think they're factory. G2 is a great kit. But as said above, get all 4 wheels off, and work at a good pace. Once you add the hardener, the paint dries quickly. When I got to the 3rd and final coat, the paint was rather tacky in the can. Good luck in getting it done.

Do youself a favor and take the pads out of the calipers. If the brake cleaner gets on the back of them there is a thin covering that will smear like wet paint, makes a pads look crappy! I did mine with the G2 almost a year ago and they still look as good as they did the day I did them. If you are doing the rotor hats, as I did leave the wheels off for 24 hours or so. If you are doing just the calipers put them on as soon as your done.

Good luck to you!

Thanks for the tip. I'm only painting the calipers since I got Rotorpros rotors the hub comes prepainted. How hard is it to take the brake pads off? What's involved? Just a couple of screws?

If your pulling the calipers to change the rotors already they just pop out.

I used the G2 kit. As previously stated, it comes with a cleaner. I did mine when the car was only 5 days old so the calipers were pretty clean. The first 5 months after I got the car, I used it as a daily driver but then I got transfered into the city and now I only drive it on weekends.

The G2 kit is brushed on and to be honest, it could not be any easier. I have got to be the world's worst painter and these came out perfect. I was worried about brush strokes being visible but the paint smoothed out very nicely as it dried. You won't be able to see any brush strokes.

I thought about taping around the pads and callipers so I would not accidentally get paint here it did not belong, but the paint stays on the brush and does not drip. It was very easy to paint with this.

I had some paint left over when I was done so I painted the mustang letters in the door sill. I just dabed it on not worrying if I painted outside the lines and then wipped off the sill with a rag and some paint thinner. It came out nice.

After the paint was dry, I applied a set of calliper decals I had purchased from http://www.xnonmods.com

Here are some pictures:

Is the one brush that comes with the kit enough? Ive had my kit for a couple months and I thought I heard that it only has like a shelf life of 6 months...anyone know if thats true? Thanks for any help.

If you do it all in one session, the one brush may be sufficient but I used a second brush for the door sill. If you pour the paint and hardener into separate containers so you could apply the paint in two applications, or to have a friend help you with the painting, then you will need some more brushes.
