Has anyone painted the stock calipers? I am getting a black StopTech BBK and would like to paint the silver rear calipers to match. What's the best paint to use and is it possible/best to strip the silver paint from Ford off? Please post pics. Thanks

Jon

P.S. I did search and didn't find what I was looking for.

Hey John, there are a few companies that sell brake caliper paint kits. My car isn't in just yet, but if you check my signature below, and click on the Eastwood Caliper Paint Kit, you'll see what I am going to use. They offer different colors, if you go to their site. I'm using theirs, as their kit is meant to paint the whole caliper, not just a portion of it. Hope this helps.

Go to AutoZone. They carry Dupli-Color caliper paint. Just follow the enclosed instructions. You don't have to remove any paint from the Ford calipers. There isn't any. They are aluminum. All natural. I bought Black for mine, but have yet had the time to do them.

I used the duplicolor paint on mine... followed all the instructions, even put on 3 coats of paint and after a month or so, the paint starts chipping off. Mainly the rears. I've done this three times now. Each time, I sand them and repaint... still chipping. I have read a lot about painting calipers on-line lately and it seems the best way to do it is get some high-temp (800* and higher) engine paint and spray paint them. Much easier that way too since you just have to wrap the rotor and tape off a little around it and the wheel well, etc. Sure beats using a brush on the calipers. Of course you don't have quite the color selection as with these brake paint kits.

I'm going to try this next. I know I spray painted my mufflers with this high-temp engine paint and have had no chipping whatsoever. The mufflers should get hotter than the calipers anyway.

Two coats will help deter chipping and look much better. Allow sufficient drying time between coats. Caliper cleaner and a brush come with the kits. Fun and easy mod.

Ian's post beat me. OK I used duplicolor the first time and it chipped some. The last time I used G2 Caliper Paint from The Tire Rack. When you mix the paint and the hardner you have 4-6 hours to use it before it gets hard, so be prepared to do all four wheels. Ian, I have had no chips yet. It really gets hard and looks tough and I don't think it will chip. Gotta be easier than spray paint.

I didn't wait 2 hrs for the paint to dry before putting the wheels on.

I also used the Dupicolor on mine. Put two coats on initially, then chip it up every once in a while.

Kind of tough to see, but this is the best pic I have showing the caliper.

I used Dupli-color #BCP402 black satin and was very happy.
I put two coats on and I must be lucky beacuse I have had no chipping problems. I went with black because I wanted to highlight my wheels more than the calipers. Bought it at NAPA. Whatever you use be sure to clean the calipers good and like was said before, be prepared to do all four calipers.
Sorry I have no pics

I used Duplicolor yellow, sanded the crap out of the calipers and ended up not being very happy. Next time I'm just going to buy some pre-painted calipers like those found on the Bullitt.

Also, after you paint you can't drive the car for about a day to allow the paint to dry properly. :bang: Thats very hard to do when you only have one car.

Looks good, where did you get the "MUSTANG" caliper decal? Or did you paint that?

Xenonmods sells those. they are only $7.99 and come with the ponies, the word mustang, Cobra and SVT. It includes 6 of each.

Here's a picture of mine.

BTW, this is a super simple job. You do need to allow 2 hours for the paint to dry between coats and 24 hours before you drive it. I put on 3 coats and still had a lot left over. I used G2.

My paint is holding up well, but chipped in some corners where I hit it taking the wheel off.

I used the G2 system and it is holding up great. No chips like I had with the duplicolor.

I just did my GT takeoff calipers last week. I used 3 coats of the Duplicolor red and black. I haven't installed them yet, but I'm happy with how they turned out (the pads aren't installed in the photos, I ordered ceramics):

anyone have any pics for taping off the calipers in regards to a fool proof way of keeping the paint off the pads and the rotor? i mean i know people say just tape it off but is there any tips for masking the area off?

I've painted three sets and never taped them off. Just take your time and you will be fine.

I agree with Sandyman, there really isn't that many places that need taping. Biggest thing I think is go spend a couple bucks on a set of brushes from Wal-mart or some other craft store. The brush in the kit stinks. I used Duplicolor and the Xenonmods decals. Like Dustin I have some chipping that I believe is due to contact with the wheels when removing and installing them. The decals have been on there since July, the ponies still are great, the MUSTANG has a couple of letters trying to come up. I think that is acceptable, considering washing and blow drying with my leaf blower.

Paul.....They look great. Tell me the advantage of using the GT take-offs? Bigger/better? Do they fit okay. Also, what about upgrading to the GT rotors.....if I did this could I move my V6 front rotos to the rear?I already have the 17" GT bullit take-offs on my V6.
