Paint matching

Are there different tints to our vehicles colors?

I have a Windveil Blue and I have a pair of Roush quarter window louvers that were prepainted when I ordered them. When I got them I noticed that they were a darker tint then my Mustang.

I also ordered some touch-up paint and noticed too that it was a darker tint. And just recently my painted JLT CAI was darker also.

I would be surprised that my paint would be faded already so is it true that there mybe different tints to the factory paint?

If so it looks like a local painter will be the way to go for all my painting needs.

I noticed the same thing. I got a GT take off front fascia and depending on the light and angle it looks slightly different. Especially where the bumper cover meets the fender flares. I also have Windveil Blue.

I just ran into this problem too. Dropped my satin silver GT off at my bodyman's to get a scratch in the door fixed. The first time he sprayed the door it didn't match. He went back to DuPont with the VIN number and they told him there are 2 alternates if the first one doesn't work Guess what, neither one of those was 100% either. It's close but if you stand back far enough you can see a difference.

I'm going to take it back to him next month and he said he'll spray the whole side of the car, which is apparently what you do when you can't get a perfect match.

A good painter can mix up the paint to come close to match.

With mass production, unless you have a really really really good paint shop that controls everything from temperature, humidity, etc, there will be color variations in the paint from the same color depending on the date it was done.

One option is getting the actual paint on your car scanned and having that used to mix up the color for the touchup.

The plastic parts never seem to match the metal parts from factory. But part of that is that suppliers are painting the plastice, while the car is being sprayed in the factory at another time and place... never match!

I got my painted mirror cover's a couple of day's ago and they are darker than the paint on my car . The guy painting my hood scoop called me today and said that my it was finished being painted. I am praying it's somewhat close . Soinc blue seems like it would be a difficult color to match because when it hit's the sun it turns like five different colors, that's what I also love about it.

Hmm... I am having the mudflaps painted for my car in LL, and though the prep work sucked and they are redoing them, the color seemed fine... Either way, they are low, so even a slight difference should be hard to see...

I can see a problem if we were talking about the quarter window louvers though...

Just had my new GT500 hood, and front bumper painted. There are actually 4 different color references on the computer that mixes the paint for Windveil blue. My painter painted me 4 swatches. None of them are exactly right. Most of them are darker. There is one that is closer than the rest. But your painter will have to adjust the color to get it right.

Well, I'm gonna take my Roush wing in to the shop today and possible have him paint some stripes on as well. I'll see how it works out.

Let me know how it goes with your paint job. My car is going under the
gun either this week or next Monday.

Almost no 2 paints are identical. You can take the same pint of paint, shoot it from 2 different guns, and get 2 different colors. Plastics absorb different amounts of paint than sheetmetal and can also give a slightly different appearance even if painted side-by-side.
That said, a good painter should be able to get so close that it's nearly undetectible, but you always run that risk ordering pre-painted parts.

As said above, it appears that plastics are harder to match, especially w/ metallic paints. I had my GT/CS rear cover painted and depending on the angle you look at it, it is a slightly darker color, but most of the tiem it is unnoticeable.

Exactly.
Look at your cars bumper covers to quarter panels from different angles and light, youll see the slight difference from the plastic to the metal even from the factory.

After working in the industry, I know that the plastic parts do come in from the supplier already painted. So that is why you see the mis-match even from the factory. The factory only paints the steel body. They have an acceptable tolerance on paint matching. It's juat that their acceptable, and yours may not be the same.
