Paint job gone Wrong!!

Venting and looking for some advice!!

Took hood roush scoop and plenum cover to local custom painter. I had holes in hood for scoop already in place. Scoop was Matte Black and Plenum cover was gloss black. Instructions to painter were to paint a White stripe in center of hood with 1/2" outer stripe to end just under scoop. Total Width was width of scoop and remain this wide until it reaches nose of hood at which point, was to follow contour of hood. Paint scoop color of car (Vista Blue). Attach scoop. Plenum cover was to be based in Vista Blue then white in color flames. Then "STANG FEVER" on both sides of plenum in 3-D white letters.

Round 1:

After about 6 weeks, hood was completed. Went to retrive and found they were painting traditional colored flames on Plenum cover . Re-iterated my desire for White colored flames not traditional! Owner/airbrush artist finally realized he was wrong and said he would correct it.

At first sight of the hood I noticed that they didn't keep the width of the stripe from scoop to nose. Even though I didn't originally request this, it sorta grew on me. But something didn't seem right. I couldn't tell what was wrong until a PIC of the front revealed the issue of being slanted towards drivers side . So out came the tape measure, and sure enough of center by 1/2 inch. Width decreased by 3 inches from scoop to nose. It appeared to be a failed attempt to follow side contour of hood. By this time I had also picked up the Plenum cover only to get light blue flames with black "STANG FEVER" letters! Letters were tilted off center and looked like a 12 year old could do better. Now mind you, this shop has some pretty impressive airbrushed bikes in house and etc...

So I called the shop to notify them of my displeasure. At first I was reluctant to allow them to touch it again. After sleeping on it, I finally relented. They agreed to correct in a couple of weeks. So I type up a 2 page letter stating what my intial instructions were, what was wrong, and my expectations. Of which included the shop performing corrections at no additional cost to me. As well as last statement of which indicated if repairs weren't done to my satisfaction, I would require them to pay another shop to re-do. I stopped at the shop to show them the car a couple of days before the agreed upon date for them to receive my hood. Went over the details with the "nephew" who seems to be the manager (3 person shop, Owner, nephew, and teenager). It is the owner that does the painting.

I showed up on the agreed date with hood and plenum cover. Nephew greets me and we unload hood. I then proceeded to retrieve plenum cover from cab, at which time nephew informs me that I need to show and discuss with owner issues on plenum cover. Needless to say the owner was having nothing to do with my issues on Plenum cover. WHen I stated flames were to be white, his response was that it wouldn't look good (ummmm who's the customer here). I finally told him to not worry about the plenum cover, I would pay someone else to re-do to my liking!!

No onto the Hood, at first he didn't see my issues until I incested that he get a tape measure. Then he agreed to re-do.

30 mins prior to pickup, Nephew calls to tell me they need one more day as another layer of clear was being put on due to "fisheyes". Next day I pickup hood. Get it home to find..................

IT'S FRICKEN WORSE

Fisheye's all over, stripe is off by 1/2 inch from scoop to nose, drip of clear in front corner, after three days on car, 1/2 inch stripe starts to peel aat scoop!

Sorry for the Long Post. Now looking for advise as shop, again wants another shot at it!! I refuse to let that happen!! Now I'm told by reputable shops that hood needs to be stripped down and blended with fenders to do it correctly!!

Where are you from? Man this sucks. If you want it done right ,it's gonna cost you more. I think all of us have had issues that cost us more$. I wasted 400 on a front fascia painting and also paid for a pre painted chin spoiler only to have it redone. You are not alone my friend. Chalk it up as a lesson learned and a bit of bad luck.

HD Custom Finishes (A.K.A. Hogs Den Customs) Located in Holland, MI!

Here's the real kicker, initally the owner was showing us a car "they" are putting together to compete for the Riddler Award next year! As it turns out, the builder of this car is merely renting space from them!!

Tried speaking to owner yesterday on the phone. Nephew kept asnwering stating owner was busy and that he would return my call. Every hour or so I tried again. I finally informed the nephew of my problems and insisted that the owner call me by end of day with his plans to pay for the repairs. Still nothing. This morning tried again. Waited about an hour, this time I informed the Nephew that if owner didn't return my call by 1p.m., I would be placing a call to report this non licensed facility (which I found out yesterday) to the state of MI, as well as BBB and File small claims suit!

15 minutes later Nephew called me to state the owner didn't want to discuss on phone only in person. So, off to the shop I went (mind you that the Mustang was sitting at home in opposite direction by 40 miles). I brought some pics of problems. Well, Owner proceeded to inform me that **** happens and that he was man enogh to admit it. The proceeded to tell me that when I became man enough to bring him the car he would correct it, then informed me that he doesn't take to threats and proceeded to threaten to have a personal friend of his (who he claims is the owner of the million dollar Riddler car) tie up my car for 5 years!! LOL

At that point I just walked out!!

As I was leaving the driveway, the Riddler builder was arriving, so I took up another conversation with him to let him know what was happening (as I struck conversation with him while waiting for the shop to pick up hood last week). He gave me his number and suggested I sleep on it one night before I di anything. He also stated that he would talk to the shop owner.

So, I'll sleep tonight, then call in the morning. My plan is if owners response is the same, a phone call will be placed to the state, BBB claim filed and start Small claims process!!

That sucks completely. I know how it feels to feel like you're being taken advantage of, but to have him say it to your face! I hope you give him what's coming. If a business person doesn't want to treat their customers right, they can do something else for a living and let the rest of us get on with our lives!

Wow. I can't believe that people like this are in business. It would have taken everything I had not to beat his a$$ . Small claims will be your best option. It's a minimal fee and since he has a business it should be fairly easy to collect. write the times and dates of every conversation if you haven't already and many pics and videos. Good luck.

I can believe it. Thanks for sharing. You'll save someone the same headache. Definately pursue the matter civilly. Be calm and clinical in your complaint. Subpoena all your experts (paint and body guys who can testify for you). And be patient. Your goal is to have this guy compensate you for the mess he left on your car. It may take awhile.

That sucks big monkey nuts!! Thankfully all the work I've had done on all my car's were done by a great shop with lots of care for me and my ride. Had a small accident with my Firebird and took it to his shop. It was my first time going there but I had heard good things about them. Even though the accident was my fault he got my insurance company to pay for NEW OEM parts. My car was a 1991 Pontiac Firebird. it took him about 2 1/2 months to get all the parts he needed but still called me every couple of weeks to let me know how his progress was coming along. The work still looks great 6 years later and I will not use anybody else unless threated with death.

Man that does suck. Sounds like the "owner" is a real winner.

Well............ I slept on it and with the help of a friend, decided that I will take the car for this hack to see the outcome. I will insist that he will pay to have this corrected. He will not touch my car!! I will take someone with me as a witness (as well as contacting the Riddler builder to ensure he is also on site). I will also prepare my Small Claims paperwork (available online). If owner still insists on doing the work himself and not paying, I will leave his shop with next stop the courthouse to file the paperwork. As well as placing a call to the State of Michigan Regulatory Affairs!

Here is PIC of Round 1. Not a very good Pic, however, does show how off center the stripe is.

I'll post some of the current results after I can get some better PICS. Tough to shoot imperfections!!

That stinks! I hope you get what you want in the end, and its all straightened out. The steps you would take are what I would recommend.

PICS of Round 2 Taken

First one is zoomed next to scoop on drivers side. Second is behind scoop (both are just samples as Hood has a good 20 or more). Then the peeling at nose of Scoop.

Dude I would be totally pissed too. I would give them the chance to make it right by paying someone else but they will have to re-scuff and re-shoot the paint to fix those trouble areas.

To fix it correctly this time, will require a complete striping of the hood (3 layers of paint is max) First layer was factory, second was Round 1, and Third is Round 2 that you see in the recent PICS. The Fisheye PICS are just a couple of the areas, these exist all over the hood. Not to moention the areas that look like haze (and can't be captured on camera).

I brought the car into work so I can pay him a visit today so he can see first hand! We'll see what Mr. owner has to say! I won't hold my breath (hence I have also prepared the documents to promptly file in court if his stance is the same as it was on Friday)!

That's a messed up paint job. I wouldn't go back to that shop if I were you.

The only thing I will accept from him at this point is payment to have a reputable shop fix the issues! Nothing less! He will not touch it again! I'm merely taking him the car so he won't have an argument that he didn't have an opportunity to see it first hand!
