New Wheel & Caliper Clearance Issue Resolution

Before the site hack, I posted an issue I ran into after buying my new Godspeed Omega wheels (rear, 18x10 w/ Nitto NT555 285/40s). In summary the problem was after mounting, I only had 0.25mm clearance between back of new wheel spoke and rear brake caliper bracket (1 playing card thickness). After hours and hours of discussion with the Godspeed Omega wheel certified techs, Ford techs, brake system CAD drawings, etc., I had to resort to using wheel spacers. After taking exhaustive confirmation measurements of the wheel (backspacing, offset, centerline, spoke thickness) and Ford OEM brake system measurements, both Godspeed and Ford claim all is within specs in their respective areas. However, I’m supposed to have (on average) 6 to 9mm of clearance with these wheels and the 06 MustangGT OEM rear calipers… as stated, I had less than 1 mm. So something (& someone) is definitely wrong. Regardless…. to move forward I opted to use hub-centric (70.5mm center bore) 5 x 114.3 spacers, 1/8” (3.2mm) thick. Made specifically for the Mustang, these spacers are fab’d by Maximum Motorsports out of San Luis Obispo, CA, and fit like a glove. Caliper clearance is now 3.5mm (just over an 1/8”). I opted for 1/8” spacers as I did not want to change out my wheel studs. As I was told, it is recommended to add longer studs when using any spacer ¼” or thicker. Would have been nice to ascertain why I don’t have the clearance other S197s do, as vendor (Cruizin Concepts Wholesale) said they’ve never encountered a situation like mine with any other S197. I’d like to hear from other 18” Godspeed Omega wheel owners regarding their rear caliper clearance. I’ve attached some pics of the “before spacer” clearance, and pics of fitment after (as you can see, my tires just barely extend beyond rear fender lip.. by about ¼” each side). Folks at Cruizin Concepts were great… really tried to help solve this clearance mystery.. and even kicked in some coin to offset the cost of my spacers. BTW, the ride is awesome… great grip, better handling, and wheel balance was dead-on. After seeing my ride with the new Godspeeds, I can’t figure out why I was driving around so long with those OEM 17s ! Night & Day (performance and looks… IMO of course).

I think it looks good! How about some more pictures of the overall view, maybe a side, front angle, and hinny shot?

Or you could have just asked Leo, he would've told you about the spacers in 1 minute.

Looks good, glad you got it resolved.

Thx. I did a quick search and found Leo's "wheel spacer how to" writeup (very impressive btw)... and then his post to sell the 1" spacer kit 1 month later... looks like he's had lots of practice with spacer mods! My rears are already outside the fender lip... so I was trying to minimize pushing them out any further by using the 1/8" spacer. The clearance still seems pretty close (about 3.5mm), but I don't think those rear caliper brackets will flex and come into contact with the back of the wheel (at least I hope not).

Not surprising. I bought Saleen Parnelli Jones wheels for my GT500. Several "experts" told me they had installed the PJ wheels on GT500s and they would fit over the GT500 brembo front calipers with no problem. Well, naturally, on my car the wheel spokes just barely rubbed the front calipers. I tried the wheels before mounting tires, TPMS, etc., and could have returned the wheels but I liked them too much. So I also went with the Maximum Motorsports 1/8 spacers and got it resolved to my satisfaction. I had plenty of thread left on my studs. But I guess the lesson on aftermarket wheels is that you never know for sure.
