I have 18x9 inch rims. I am looking at som BFG . I currently have 255/55/18 tires. I am considering going with 285/40/18 for the same rims. However, the tire specs for BFG say it shoudl be used on rims from 9.5" to 11" and I am using the 9" rims.

Can I get away with this ? Will it look baloonish ? Will it pop off the bead ?

Thoughts and feedback appreciated.

If you do not go by their spec then basically you can consider it to be unsafe. Although some shops will still install them a lot won't. I have the 285's on the back mounted to 18x10's. The do look good but on a 9" rim I think the would balloon quite a bit. Not sure how that would look, but I wouldn't take any fast corners.

Just thought, can you go with 275's instead? They fit on an 18x9 rim and are only around 1/2" narrorwer, but not sure what the tire diameter is. If I remember correctly you already have different diameters on the front versus the back so it really wouldn't bug you too much if they didn't match the stock diameter. I don't have my BFG tire spec sheet handy.

The reason I picked the 285 vs the 275 is the 285 is 27" tall, like my front. the 275 is 26.7" tall. Only slightly small, but I currently have a 29" tall tire. I was hoping to at least stay at 27". Plus the 275 works on the 9" wide rim.

Also, the 275 is only .5 inches wider than my current 255. heck, I may have to get a wider rim, however, they don't make them in my style which means all new rims all the way around.

Decisions, decisions

Hey Bryan, I'm runing BFG's 285/40/18 on the rear with an 18 x 9 wheel and it's doing great. No buldge's and I ran 20+ run's at the drag strip along with plenty of "spirited" road driving, with no problem's. 10's would be better, but 9's are doing great.

I can but they are too small (diameter). They need to be a minimum 27" tall - for my taste.

it'll be fine unless you are putting extreem lateral forces on the tire ie. road racing/autox, if you dont do that then dont worry, if you do then always go with the recommended
