My factory grill is cramping my style

I was looking at my GT grill today, and frankly it looks like pooh. There are portions of the factory grill which look as though it ought to be holes but aren't. These fake holes look ugly. See my attached pics. The areas outlined in red are what i'm talking about.

Has anyone tried eliminating these filled-in areas to make them holes to match the rest of the grill? I'm not sure but it looks like a Dremmel could do it.

Any comments?

There is a pretty simple reason for those holes being filled in both the upper and lower grilles

Those holes were closed up to allow less air in the radiator. Espeically in winter months, it could result in excessive cooling, not allowing the engine to come up to proper operating temperature

The lower grille was actually added very late in the development in the Mustang. Early mules were spotted without that cover with all four "rectangles" being opened.

At the very least, I would like to get rid of those two pieces in the lower grill. Maybe i'll have to convert them to brake cooling ducts.

Good Idea or I've been thinking of attaching a dryer style flexible exhaust duct behind the driver' side to direct cooler air up into the CAI area....

Yes, a Dremel works great to oepn up the holes. It's not as easy as you'd think though. That's some pretty tough plastic believe it or not. Also, it leaves some pretty rough edges, but they'd only be noticable close up.

Ford claims they are coming out with a GT grille that has the same honeycomb pattern as the stock grille but w/o the foglights or the pony and their prototype grille had ALL the holes open.

Another reason some of them are closed on the stock grille is to keep the hood from flying off.

These cars should have been equipped with hood pins from the factory.

Agent 47 has a set up replacing the lower grille to adapt it to a brake cooling system. Very nice but also kinda pricey. $229 for the grille & $195 for the ducting kit. If you're gonna do a lot of racing it'd be worth it.
Very nice stuff though.

Here's a close-up of the grille I was working on and it shows how a cut out "hole" would look.

hmmmm....it looks almost like you need to build some type of jig and then use that to guide something like a router to cut all those things out.

I don't think you'd need to. That pic is from a "little" project I was working on a while back where I was trying to make a factory style grille w/o lights or the pony in it.

The plastic that fills the holes isn't that thick and you can use the honeycombs to guide where you're going. The easiest way I found to do it was using a sideways cutting bit in the Dremel. Cutting out those holes was easy compared to everything else I was trying to do.

looks like you cracked it

my v6 grille has less blocked out openings

and the cooling shouldnt be a problem, the antifreeze only goes to the radiator when the temp reaches the one set at the thermostat

My V6 Grill had the upper holes open and you could see silver portions of the body through the grill. Looked very cheap.

With a black car you probably don't have to worry about that. But maybe that's why they blocked it out.

Anyone using the upper grill in this link? I like how it keeps the fogs and eliminates the pony.
