Methods for installation of Vintage Emblems on 2006 GT...ideas?

I recently purchased some vintage Mustang emblems. These are true replacement parts from 69-70’s era and have the pin and clip attachments. I plan to remove my GT logo and install one of these in it’s place. While I don’t like the idea of drilling holes in my fenders, I suppose I could do that but would rather use quality 3-M Red doubleface tape. I believe I can cut and grind down the pins but would then be committed to tape (I think this will turn out to be the best solution)

Does anybody know a source of good tape that I could purchase for this mod? (Links?)

I suppose I could silicone them on but doubt it would hold as well as other methods...

If you HAVE drilled for an emblem, let me know how the pin and clip work, and if you would recommend installation of this method. I know we did it for years this way but we have made progress with tape where I think this may not be my ideal choice. Opinions?

Thanks for any help offered.

I've installed emblems on this resto. It was pain in the ****.First I made a template out of art paper by pushing the emblem into the art paper, then I used a piece of flat metal to make sure my pin holes would line up after drilling.after a few tries I finally went for it and it worked.Just make sure you allow for the barrel clip and undersize your drill bit by a 32nd so the clip will compress and hold.Aligning the bumpers was a bigger pain.Good luck! The two side tape is IMO the best way to go.Use the 3-M tape.

Guess what. When you remove the GT you will see two holes.

some 3M tape from autozone is good i mean people use that tape to hold their side and quarter window scoops on the car so i think it will hold an emblem just make sure to put something in the holes so you do not get water in there

Mongoose: So your saying that the GT logo on an 05-06 is the same pin and clip design? Crap. That will make it more difficult to remove, plus leave holes to fill...

John, I believe the GT emblems have the pin for location purposes only and the pin is not clipped - the emblem is held in place by the double sided tape. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong - but that's how it was on my '00 GT and I doubt Ford has changed anything since.....you might get lucky if your new emblem will cover the existing pin hole???

I am not sure since I don't know where they will be located but doubtful since I am using the old 69-70 MUSTANG script and it is fairly thin.

I have not tried to pull off the GT emblems yet and just finished cutting and filing down the pins on the new emblems. I believe the tape is my best option and just hope there is enough on it to keep a firm grip.

Thanks for all the info...

Yes there are two holes. You remove the GT by heating them with a hair drier. Use fishing line between the tape and the paint and pull while heating. Maybe you should just remove one and check it out. You need one pin to go in one of the holes to hold it straight. What you are trying to do may not work.

Most fender emblems will cover the holes, so no need to "fill". I have 3M tape holding on the M U S T A N G lettering on the truck lid and it's fine. 3M is also holding on my side louver which is also OK. 3M tape is a pretty good product and you should feel confident that it'll hold. I DEFINITELY would not drill.

Steeltown, can you send or post a pic of your M U S T A N G ? I also have a set of those letters to apply and since you thought of it first, I would like to see your spacing, and perhaps a hint at what you used as distance between in inches?

Thanks for all the responses. I am going to use tape. I think they will hold.

If not, There is more where these came from...

John, I "retro'd" mine 2 years ago February as soon as it came off the truck. Here's a link to a post from 2005 (just scroll down to find my response to someone looking for measurements) which will give you original measurements from the '60's. You'll have to modify height/width of course. The rest is self explanatory.

So take a look.....and do it right, it'll look much better. And everything I have is 3M tape. DON'T DARE put any holes in your car and DON'T worry about covering up the holes under the "GT" emblem. If by chance you're putting on a Tri Bar & Running Pony on the sides, it'll cover the holes no problem.

Actually I am pulling the GT logos and putting on true Retro 1970 Cursive MUSTANG logo. I have a couple of pics that have it there so it works for me. It is big enough that I would think I can cover both holes with it. I plan to put an additional one on my dashboard. I also like the M U S T A N G on the trunk so I got those too...true to the 1969's

I am going for the retro 1969-1970 Mach 1 Look...

Mark, I looked at the thread and link you posted. It does show both the hood and sides but not the trunk (or at least I did not find it). I have no problem trying to do it right since this is the only 29K car I will likely own in my lifetime...

Thanks for your posts.

Oh, the good ol' days.....

My first car:
1969 Mach I

My second car:
1970 Boss 302
Shaker & spoilers but no slats.
Red deluxe interior with center console (super rare in a Boss)
"W" code 4.30 Detroit locker rear (factory)
Jacked up in the rear like a true high-schooler used to do back then!!

Here you go... I purchased the lettering from www.mustangpartshouse.com Where ever you decide to purchase them, make sure that they're made my Scott Drake- IMO, they're the best. I had to return another brand as they were of poor quality and did not use 3M. Attached are some other emblems that I installed

Oh... spacing... I centered the "T", then placed the "M" and "G" where I thought was a "classic" distance(not extending beyond the taillights, actually I used the bottom slant as a guide...), then split the differences with the other letters. They were slightly modified since the pic and are now perfectly level. I've seen some spaced further, and some spaced closer. Whatever you like... PITA to clean, but worth it

Hi Steeltownstang,

I went to the web site and didn't see the dash script. Do you have the part numbers for the dash script and the trunk lid lettering? Were the trunk lid letters EMB-21?

TIA
