The cheapest way by far is to just paint them yourself. But you have to be c a r e f u l. if the paint bleeds then you've got a mess. I used blue painters tape, built it up out of thin strips, and pressed it into the plastic with a couple toothpicks. Then when I spraypainted, I did a light color coat first just to get some black on the plastic for coverage. Once it tacked up I have it a couple more light coats to finish it. It turned out really **** good, you have to get inches close to tell. The green frog tape (special made for bleed-free edging) would probably work great. Anyway here's a pic:

Thanks for that. Funny you posted, I had sent that user a PM about a week or so ago on the same subject. Thought about going that way....
My only concern on that setup is, that the lower grille is mounted behind the bumper. And while it sure does accomplish what I am trying to do, I worry a bit about being set back in too far......

Think I'm going with the Shelby center bar grille, and try to mod left and right to match....

I did this along time ago.

 

I'm kind of leaning towards painting mine. And so that I hopefully don't screw up my lights in the process...Any tips from those of you that painted? Did you sand the lights at all, or is it just as simple as taping them off and spray painting? Any special paint, or did you just go with a black spray paint from an autoparts store?

 

You will have to atleast scuff them up or the paint wont stick. You can use a green scuff pad to get between the lenses. Matte black looks the best IMO. Regular auto store paint is fine.

 

I didnt scuff mine first, theyve held up great but i used paint specifically formulated for plastic

 

If painting, I'd recommend applying an adhesion promotor between scuffing and shooting your base coat. The adhesion promotor can also be bought at most auto parts stores in the same section as the paint - it'll go on clear, then shoot the color on top.

 

Thanks everyone! It sounds like if I use a fine grit sand, followed by the adhesive promoter and a standard black plastic paint, I should be good. ...and if i miss a few spots with the sanding, would probably still be fine. As soon as I get my car out of storage, I'll get started. It will definitely add some nice dimension to the tail lights. Thanks again for everyone's help. I'll post pics in a couple weeks when it's done.

 

For those who have installed the Moss/AVS trim, did you need to add more 3M tape? I have mine ready to install after shooting them with VHT trim paint and the supplied 3M tape seems too thin and is simply not adhering.

 

I forget what mine are, but they've been attached well since day 1, no extra tape.
