Ok, you know how everyone is always wanting the rear of their mustangs painted black, but they don't like the shine of paint, don't want flat paint that is difficult to clean, and are worried about resale? I have just thought of the perfect solution!! I was thinking about how we could all fix this tonight and then suddenly I was thinking about the symbols for my company car that attach magnetically to my car. If someone were to manufacture a flat strip with the whole for the gas tank cap punched out with no gaps, we could put a mag strip as wide as the area that would have the appearance of flat paint, no shine, and would be removable whenever you want. If anyone wants to talk about whether this would stay, trust me, the company symbols we use on our cars stay and have never even budged at highway speeds. SO.....who will be the first to try this and post a photo on this topic? The area is pretty straight and the mag sheet would apply in the contours perfectly, the trick will be to punch out the center hole for the mock gas cap. Good luck!

OK I know it is wrong to reply to your own post, but if someone were to by the mag strip themselves and could remove the mock gas cap without damaging it, they could lay it upside-down on the mag strip and then cut the tracing out with a artist knife or a box cutter.

True, but most people would probably assume it was adhered, most people arent in the market for magnets custom cut for a particular car, and if they are interested in taking it, I would be more worried they would mess with another part of my car on purpose. Not to mention in the tiny chance someone did take it, it wouldnt put you out an arm and a leg!

I would buy this, maybe I'll try to make one.Did something similar with Mach1 letters. Stuck them on vinyl magnet and cut out. Put the on once in a while just for a hoot. Want to keep my 05 stock so a magnetic black out panel would be great.

Vinyl accomplishes the same thing. And is readily available

The only advantage is that you can take off the magnet anytime you (or anyone else) wants to and put it back on.

But if the only reason is you don't want to mess with the paint or remove it for resale, I'd go with vinyl.

I thought about vinyl, but the average joe can't put vinyl on his car. But who can't put a mag strip on? The key would still be getting the center hole just right, otherwise you could see some color sticking through and a red stang would look bad. MyYankee, show us photos of it on a mustang when you finish. I wondering if the mag strip itself would need a flat black coating of paint or if the strip woudl be a stand alone fix in it's natural flat black.

True, I thought heavily before I put this idea on the site, but I felt if I kept it to myself, you guys would miss out on making your own. I'm betting you may be able to get the mag strip that thick froma craft store or metal supply company. It would be cool to see if this would actually look good and be this easy.

As far as someone steeling the mag strip, I still have my company symbols on my car and they are blue against my white paint. No one had attempted to steal them because they think they are painted on. I'm betting this will have a similar effect. Some that get close may even think it is applied with adhesive.

The idea of a magnet just sounds a little cheap to me

It sounds cheap, because it is. However I had a comment from one of my friends the other day. They said: I'd love to have a company car, but not if it meant I had to drive around with symbols painted on the doors everyday. I have comments like this all the time, then I peal off the symbol and they freak. I think it would look better then you think. Specially for those who are looking for a flat black appearance anyway. It should also be said that after a few scratches appear on a flat black painted rear, or marks that can't be removed made by someone putting luggage in the rear: they'd wish they had a magnet that they could remove and wash, or remove and re-purchase. I liked to see this on a mustang before I make the final decision about looks. I think NYYANKEE is trying it out. He said he should have one ready in a few days. If I had a mustang, I would make one myself, but I would need a mustang to remove the rear gas cap for tracing, etc. etc.

I also think that the magnet is better because I have company magnets on my vans and you have to take them off to clean because the dirt accumulates behind it. With the vinyl its put on with double sided tape and you can imagine the dirt that collects back thereand how do you get it off. Its easy enough to just pull the magnet clean the car and put back. It's thicker than paint! I even had little black round fake windows made for my van to drive it on the highway. It serves the same purpose.

I hope your idea works, and that you're happy with it. Just to clarify though, the vinyl is not put on with double sided tape. It's sticky on one side only. You install it with soapy water and slide it around until you get it into the proper position. Once in position, squeege the water out from behind it. I had never installed vinyl before doing mine and everyone thinks its paint.

NYYANKEE says he has a finished prototype. I think he may be able to put some photos of it soon. Exciting!
