Issues with Matte Black paint?
Hey all, looking for some input on paint.
Considering having stripes painted on my Redfire GT/CS, but I am pretty sure gloss black would be too much with my paint scheme.
I like the subtle look of the matte black door stripes that came stock, so I asked a local body shop about doing stripes in matte black.
He said matte black wouldn't hold up, that I'd be back in 6 to 8 months looking for touchups, etc.
The Saleen Parnelli Jones 302 Boss comes with the mate black trunk lid and spoiler, can't believe they would paint it a color that would start fading within a year.
Anyone have any experience with matte black?
Should I be looking at the body shop guy for telling me that?
Any help would be appreciated.

i just got done spraying matte black on my hood and decklid, and spoiler
after looking at a lot of paints and doing a lot of reading, your body guy is right, most matte blacks dont hold well, they chalk up and cannot be waxed. and they fade over time....
although, i stumbled upon a rat rod black that eastwood makes, that wont fade, chalk, and can be waxed if you want to.. but it makes it shine a little and takes away a little of the dullness
just go to eastwood.com and look up the rat rod black kit they have, its only $100 for the paint and all.. just gotta pay the body guy to prep and paint....
heres a pic of the finished product.

n8r your car looks awesome. That is the look I always wanted to go for. Thanks for the tip on the paint. Yes, flat black is a problem. as you pointed out it chalks up ALOT, dulls unevenly and God forbid you accidentally get wax on it. It is almost impossible to keep clean and scratch marks or mars just seam to appear out no where.
it is the matte finish itself, but
if you paint matte clear over it, your good!!!!
matte clear will not have problems, its just the black that does it
matte clear is tricky cause you can only spray over the black with it, not the whole hood or you will have matte red and matte black
and thanks for the props on the car guys!! i love it, and it gets lots of attention...
oh and by the way I HAVE WAX ON THAT BLACK IN THE PHOTO.....
the eastwood stuff is good paint

I've seen some flat black stripe jobs painted with new clear coat for flat paint. Its been out for a couple of years now.I'll get more info tomorrow.Pat at Colorado Mustang had a Mach 1 painted this way.
Some excellent points have some up and it beought a new question to my mind. I'm pretty new to all this modding stuff, and I have no idea how to go about finding a shop that I can trust. Don't really know anyone near me that is into this so no one to go to for referrals. How did you guys decide on the shops you ultimately used?
I just asked around if i saw a car with a nice paint job, i just asked were iti was done, like i said before the guy that did mine did an excellent job with all the white paint (that paint is imaculate) the flat black isnt perfect, but the car isnt a show car. This is also a good place to get advice just ask for any one in your are to recomend a shop
ask others with nice cars....
or call around to some shops, show up and ask for an appraisal and based on the price, along with the quality of their shop, quality of their personell, and the type of vehicles they paint.....
you'll be able to pick the best shop for your money

I have had the semi gloss black on my hood for a couple of years. It has held up well, but does not have a clear coat on it. It looks great for a few days after a full Zaino treatment. But it is hard to keep the little streaks out of it most the time. I had a local detail shop that had been around for many years tell me to use Pledge on it. It does help.
