My 65 Coupe had a great chrome piece on the blade portion of the "Hockey Stick" I attached a link to a photo of what I am talking about. Anyone know of a similar mod made for the 05?

Anyone care to try a photoshop version?

My goal is to pseudo recreate my 65 with the new model and I think this, with vintage tri bar pony badges, the chrome tail light and fog light bezels with MRT 1/4 louvers would go a long way. What do you guys think? My biggest problem is mine was a midnight blue and I don't think any similar colors are to be offered soon.

good luck to you. While I was at the Mustang show last weekend in Ft. Lauderdale I was checking out those and kept thinking to myself someone has to make those for our 05s.
I am a little concerned that they may stick out a little too far though as ours doesnt look like it is made for one. But I hope I am wrong, because those would be sweet.

Neil,

I think that is a good idea. I do not know of any being produced yet. If you have a photoshop request, you can try posting in that forum, those guys are great PS'ers.

Neil,

I think any external chrome on this car is going to be difficult to do without looking very "stuck on". The 65 and 66 Mustangs had gobbs of chrome compared to modern cars - both bumpers, bumper guards, door handels, head light buckets, grill (brushed on non-GTs), pony and corral, back up lights, tail lights, antenna, window trim, emblems and interior details. They were born in the era of chrome and it was an integral part of the look of the car.

Our 05s have zip, none, nada except the grill pony, GT emblems and AC vent surrounds. IMHO, adding chrome around the tail lights or the fogs is just going to look out of place and will not enhance the look of the car. But, I am wrong several times a day (at least) and look forward to seeing what you do! Good luck with your mods.

Several forum members have made their own chrome around the tailights with tape I liked the look. Also I believe Pony Girl was looking into having a local auto comp make the bezels in either/or chrome or black as several members expressed interest.
I will be extremely careful not to go over board with chrome as I have seen some do but I would like to add enough subtle details to go with the retro theme. Unfortunately you may be right re the Hockey stick as a chrome add on may stick out too far where the original wrapped around the fake vent outlet.

Don't do it man, I think that'd look terrible on an '05. Please, keep the "retro" to a minimum.

I disagree. I had thought of this idea myself. Those chrome inlays would actually be more accurately retro than the side scoops are.

See, the sides scoops come from the Shelby Cobra Mustangs of that era. Technically, the GTs are not of that class. They are part of the same GT class of that era. So an accurate retro would be to have quarter window louvers, a duck tail and crome side inlays.

Not only that but part of what is NOT retro enough for me is how deep the vertical side "dent" is. Which is also why it would be hard to make one that would not stick out too far.

However, have you guys thought that it might not be all chrome? After all...the whole idea is NOT to make it look EXACTLY like the old cars but to evoke the same idea, feeling and to remind the viewer of the car of it.

I had thought of this idea also and think that an after market product will eventually be done.

I like this grill photochopped below. It is not over done, any other chrome pieces may not work. You don't see a lot of chrome on modern cars, mainly on some trucks.

Bradford,
I agree with you that side scoops don't fit with a retro look for a GT and louvers do fit . A duck tail? No, Ford did not do duck tails in the 60s. Chrome side inlays also don't work if you are trying to model after an early GT. The chrome side trim was deleted as part of the factory GT option package. Also agree that the idea is to not try and duplicate the look but to get the feel of it!

Yes, Ford did do ducktails in the 60's. '68 California Special and the Shelby's. Where do you think all these ducktail ideas for the '05 are coming from?

As for the side chrome, I personally don't like it because I'm a fastback fan... which is what the '05 copied. The fastbacks didn't come with the chrome. I'm so used to seeing them w/o it, that it would look out of place to me. I saw two '66 fastbacks at a car show one time that had the '66 chrome on them and it looked really funny.

Oops, there I go again. Early generation GTs in my head always means 65 and 66. No ducktails and no side chrome on GT verts, coupes or fastbacks. Your are right of course about the 67s and up. I stand corrected.

That lite bar looks great.Suttle and not to over done.I think keeping it suttle with out plastering chrome all ove the car keeps a modest Retro look.

No problem. Personally, I WANT someone to correct me when my Mustang knowledge is wrong.
Sort-of OT, but for the longest time I thought the Smokey & the Bandit T/A was a '79, until someone on a message board corrected me. I did some reasearch and found out they were right. I was pissed that I had it wrong all that time since that's one of my favorite cars.

I don't think this would really work on our car. The old cars had more of a C shape on the sides whereas the 05's are more of an L shape or hockey stick.
