I guess you had to be there.

As far as putting a Cobra badge on a GT, that is not rice... it's worse. I definitely don't get that. But, putting on some rocker stripes that say GT300 or whatevr number it is, you aren't trying to pretend like something you aren't. Rocker stripes are the equivalent to rally stripes. It's a type of graphic, whether painted or vinyl, that represents the original Mustangs and accentuates the retro styling of the '05. You can't compare the GT350 script on rocker stripes to a Streetglow sticker on the rear windshield of a Scion or a big "H" on the hood of a Civic.

The original GT-350 Shelby was not named for the amount of horsepower under the hood.

The book “Mustang Forty Years†by Randy Leffingwell states on pages 107 – 109:

“Shelby and Ford needed [a name] for this Mustang. Names needed legal approval. Engine designations were fine except when the engines changed, badges and printed material already made were useless. The best solution was some designation that meant nothing but seemed to represent something. That way, the model could continue for several years and receive updates constantly without alerting sanctioning bodies.
The story goes that Shelby looked across the street and asked his chief engineer Phil Remington how far away he thought a building was from where they sat. Remington paced it off. It came to 350 feet. “Fine,†Shelby said, “let’s call the little car the GT-350.†â€

That same book goes on to state on page 113 that those first GT-350’s had “289-ci V-8sâ€. “Street engines produced about 306 horsepower, while racing cars developed between 350 and 360 horsepower in dynamometer tests.â€

And to answer your question, no, the GT300 graphics are not “riceâ€. They are just another way to pay respect to the heritage of the car.

But, that number didn't have anything to do with HP or cubic inches. Carroll Shelby was trying to decide what to call his new cars along with some of the other executives back in 1964. So, finally he stood up and asked the execs how far away the assembly line was from his office. The answer, "about 350 feet". And the GT350 was born. The GT500 was first introduced in 1967, and I am not sure how the name came to be, other than it just was a bigger number and sounded better. The GT350 basically symbolizes small blocks (which the '05 would fall under) and GT500 was for the big blocks. As far as what number to put there, I personally like 350, because we have a small block and it was the original. And that is what I will be putting on my rocker stripes if I chose to get the letters.
Lewis... I guess you skipped over my earlier post. I had mentioned how Shelby came up with the GT350. That is a great story though, isn't it? Only Carroll Shelby could have done something like that. :worship: All those execs that day must have thought he was crazy.

My 2 cents.
GT350, GT500, Cobra, SVT, etc. are all specific factory versions of the Ford Mustang and a true fan would never put such labels or badges on anything but the geniune article. On the other hand, because GT300 is not a true factory version of the Mustang, it is an acceptable label.
Nuff said. Flame away!

I'm putting on my asbestos suit. If Shelby didn't touch it then it shouldn't have Shelby stripes IMO. :nono:

If you are referring to the stipes running along the topside of a car from bumper to bumper. Those are Le Mans stripes and were used long before Mr Shelby built his first Mustang GT350.

Farmerjohn you are correct that those are LeMans stripes, but Shelby was the first to place them on the Mustang

Why does everything have to be so technical? It's a car. Carroll Shelby was also the first one to put a hood scoop on a Mustang, back in 1965. Does that mean that every Mustang that has come out since then with a hood scoop is wrong? :nono: The Mustang has been one of the most customizable cars for many years, and if people want to add exterior touches that make their cars unique yet resemble a classic, then I say go for it.

I did this chop sometime ago because of that reason. This stripe idea is not trying to be a Shelby "clone" but it does pay homage to the original 65-66 GT. Plus the factory 05 GT doesn't say M U S T A N G anywhere on the outside. (It's intended to use stick on chrome lettering)

My stripes say GT 350 but that is because I have at least 350HP at the engine so I wouldn't say it is RICE

If you just stick something on the outside of a car, or it is non functional, or if it is redundant (I.E. a tach that isnt hooked up, fake boost guages, hood pins on a factory hood that still has a factory latch) then there is a 90% chance it could be rice or redneck. Sometimes rednecks and old men are as bad as ricers. If they can stick it on they will put it on.

i don't think it would be rice at all. 99.999% of all the ricers wouldn't even get it, and would therefore not include you in their "pack".

Rice is big wings, 22" wheels, ground effects, and brand stickers all over the place.

I think it's retarded to spend so much time and effort on exterior modifications, especially if there will be nothing going under the hood to back it up.
