No offense Seth, but I would rather have the plate on the front of the car than in my window...

I happen to be a police officer in VA, and I have to say legendlimetime is pretty accurate with his post. I've stopped many cars because of no front plate displayed, and it usually wasn't just because of the license plate. It gives me an opportunity to see if anything else is wrong with the car or the driver. If nothing else is wrong with the driver or car, I'll tell the driver he needs to get the license plate on the front of the car, and let him go on a warning. The only time I'll write a ticket for no front license plate, is if there are other violations, since that is the initial reason I stopped the car. Also, technically you could also get stopped or receive a ticket for putting your license plate on the dash in the window. Theres a code for having tags or license plates improperly displayed. I've stopped cars for having front plates in the window as well.

It's called "probable cause". I was a police officer for a few years and it can be useful in investigating more serious offenses (such as DUI, if a person has a valid license, registration or perhaps has warrants issued on them).

I live in Austin TX and have not had any problems yet not having the front plate on my GT...but I've only had it now a little over a month. I have, however, been looking at just how many folks don't have plates on the fronts of their vehicles. I've driven by a number of Austin PD cars and they seemed to care less, same thing with sherriff's dept. - they seem like they have bigger fish to fry. I do though plan on making a special bracket that mounts *under* the bumper and curves up to mount my plate to, instead of drilling holes in my bumper. While I"m not too worried about riding around Austin, if I travel I don't wish to invite a visit from TX DPS if I'm out on the road outside of town.

We have a "tax disc" over here, $300ish a year. It is a paper disc 3" across, you have a holder that attaches it to the windscreen. the law states that "there is a penalty for not displaying / incorrectly displaying a tax disc"
Beleive it or not, if some policeman is in a bad mood, they will fine you if the taxdisc is upside down!!

You know what bothers me, is the people who don't renew their tags. But what bothers me more are the cops who don't pull them over. I saw a car with tags that expired in 2000, and a cop right behind it and said to myself, "this should be interesting!" Nothing. And it was followed for over a mile.

I hate the fact that law abiding citizens (well, for the most part anyways) are pulled over for ticky tack things like no front plate, or not signaling for a lane change on some rural road. WTF?

Off-topic: I love when cops tail me while I'm using cruise control and they're trying to catch me speeding... I just want to know why I never got the memo that it's ok to speed between 6-8pm, because that's when everyone goes flying past me on the highway.

Why do some states require people have front plates, do they have problems with people driving down the roads in reverse?
i know you're jokin, but just in case you were really wondering why we have to have them, in San Diego, we have red light cameras, and although they often take pictures of the back plate, it is more convenient for them to grab the front plate, along with your smile and your VIN [/b][/quote]
California required front plates long before anyone thought up the idea of red light cameras. I've had mine on for decades. No big deal to me.

Dudes. Here in Tennessee I know of no such front mounted plae law. And I can tell ya I love it that way. I am required only to display a valid tag. As far as I know the cops in this state don't seem to care how just so long as it is mounted where they can see it. There is a truck in the town near where I live that has theirs at an angle on their tailgate. Besides requiring me to place a front & rear plate messes with my freedom of expression. I display my rewuired tag at the rear & then want the freedom to display whatever I wish (usually a Rusty Wallace tag) in the front.

Besides it seems to me that all of you poor people who have a $300 tax disk....WTF....that's sounds really outrageous to me? And it also sounds as though those who are unfortunate enough to have to conform to such outlandish laws are getting ripped off. Because it sound to me that that is just another way you state/county has of getting more money from it's already poor citizens. And if you are anything like me you work too hard for what you do have to throw it into some big shots pocket.

The vast majority of the time people get pulled over for a front plate violation the real reason for the stop has nothing to do with the front plate. Since it is illegal to profile people or pull someone over for "no reason" the police have tricks they can use to make a stop "legal". For example a cop watches you drive by and something bothers him or he thinks you or your car look suspicious....he also noticed no front plate and that is all he needs. So he pulls you over and has a closer look and snoops around a bit and writes you up for the no plate crap assuming he finds nothing else to get you for.
The local cops don't seem to care here in Colorado, but man...the State Troopers do! I got pulled over last month for not having a front plate, which is against the law in CO. I am now in some warning database...

I wish my GT came with something to mount a plate... anyone know the easiest way to get one mounted?? It's a few years old now and I don't want to mess it up now.
