CS Side Scoop Install - 3M Tape verses Drilling

I snagged a new set of CS side scoops (Ford, not the cheaper versions) off ebay this week and will be getting them off to the painter as soon as they get here. For those who have added these to your cars, which mounting approach did you take??

Simply use the 3M tape or drill for using the mounting studs??

I realize drilling is probably the best, long term (and permanent due the holes you just drilled) solution... but I figure going with the 3M tape only mounting, gives you an option down the road.

So real question is, for those who have only used the 3M tape mounting option, how are they holding up?

Don't have them myself, but from what I have read on this, the tape holds them just fine and allows you to remove them if you decide to.

I'd just tape it, 3M tape is pretty strong stuff

3M tape holds my mirror covers on. I'm not a fan of drilling holes when you don't have to.

3M tape holds my 3DCarbon window scoops on perfectly. I agree with everyone else. Tape it.

Yeah, the thought of drilling holes in rear quarters made me really nervous and I just wanted to see how the tape was holding up. They should be here tomorrow, so hoping i can get them off to paint before Christmas!

I did the tape and drill myself. They aren't expensive, but they aren't cheap either so I wanted to make sure the **** things stayed put. Plus, I knew that I wasn't going to be taking them off in the future. I really like how they look. The drilling isn't that bad, it is 2-3 fairly small holes.

I drilled holes and mounted them like the instructions state. I like to do things the right way.

3M tape if applied correctly will work just fine, buy the super strength foam tape for moldings 3M P/N 03614.
http://www.superiorpaneltechnology.c...p/mmm03614.htm

Use some adhesive promoter sold buy 3M, you can pick this stuff up at auto paint stores like Space age or at least use rubbing alcohol. I have seen the 3M tape at autozone.

However, 3M tape prefers temp from 70 to 100F for application so the adhesive can set-up.
I think 60F is the lowest recommended temp for application.

Inlet mesh area is the black plastic same as front grille or inlet of factory GT appearance hood scoop. It all matches nicely. Has little raised hexagon pattern in it.

That's what I needed to know before I drop them off with the painter... just in case he asks!

Tape is for wrapping Christmas presents. Drill the **** holes, you're kidding yourself if you think you'll ever want to remove them.

a wise old(car) body guy once told me, "if you can tape never drill".

Ditto. The tape will probably hold, but imagine what it is going to look like if you are a hundred miles from home and one of the scoops rips off and ends up on the side of the road somewhere miles back and you can't find it. You get to finish your trip with pieces of white foam tape on one side of the car. I have the scoops on my GT/CS and would never see a reason to take them off. If you like the look, you won't go back. They don't tape the hood scoop (four bolts), why tape the side scoops. And, black on the inserts.

I did bodywork for a living for over 30 years and I am split between both camps. Part of me says drill- yet experience has proved to me that with PROPER preparation, tape will do the job just fine. But if you must drill those holes, at least touch-up the bare metal with a rust resistant material so down the road you won't HAVE to remove them because the paint "scabbed out " around the holes you drilled !!

Now that is good advice. I think they make a touch up tube for most Ford paint colors these days too.
