CS/GTH Hood question

So I've seen alot of people on these forums using the gth hood and I have a couple questions. Right now that hood is leading my options and I'm thinking about doing it but I have a few hesitations.

1. Does it shake or move at higher speeds (assuming I have hood pins)
2. Is there any wind noise associated with it more then stock
3. (and most importantly) Does anyone know how to make it functional without screwing up it's structure

I really love this hood but I want a hood that is somewhat functional and either pulls heat out or pulls air into the engine bay. I've asked around a little bit on the shelby forums http://forum.shelbyautos.com/index.php?showtopic=710 because there was a guy there that thought about drilling holes throughout the hood to allow air flow. He ended up not doing it but I think it was do to structure/lift problems. Basically I'm wondering if anyone has done anything or has any ideas. Help is as always appreciated. Thanks!

chris

Well well..
1- nope.. it's solid as a rock (and weighs as much as one!)
2- i haven't noticed any additional wind noise
3- this would be really difficult to do without 1-screwing up the structural integrity, and 2-screwing up the look

after some deep thought i decided it was poinless to cut the hood open and make it functional, as the ideal vent location would be too far upfront to be of any use.. not to mention that i'd rather not have my engine soaking wet in the event of rain, or an occasional wash.

i'm now contemplating the thought of cutting open the cowl screen (black piece of plastic) behind the hood, knowing if i screw it up, well it's just a 60 bucks piece of plastic!

will see how that goes

good luck whatever you choose!

well thats great news on the first two as for the third that was part of my idea. Honestly what I was thinking of doing was cutting the plastic there but also drilling like this guy was thinking of doing:

http://forum.shelbyautos.com/index.p...indpost&p=1275

it's post 110 if it doesn't come up. His idea looks like it would work without destroying the structural integrity and a body shop guy told me he thought it would work but I need opinions from yall... do? don't?

I just got my car back last night with the hood on it.

1. Does it shake or move at higher speeds (assuming I have hood pins):After driving it home anything above 60 MHP it does shake a little (I do NOT have hood pins yet) but it's really not noticable unless you are looking

2. Is there any wind noise associated with it more then stock: None

3. (and most importantly) Does anyone know how to make it functional without screwing up it's structure: I am sure it can be done however it will probably cost you a bundle as the hood will need alot of work to keep the structure intact.

I had to modify mine to fit over my Roushcharger by cutting out the center section. The inner layer of this hood is molded after the stock mold but overall the hood is about a quarter inch thicker then the stock hood so the inner layer will sit a little lower then stock. In the picture below you can see where they cut the center out and filled in the gap between the inner and outer layer with fiberglass, looks like part of the mold. The small unfinished hole is something that was found on final installation, the alternator rubs a little , the Roush kit relocates the alternator at a high position. Overall, the hood is actually stronger now with the extra fiberglass in the middle.

good to know thanks for the feedback gpstang ... and holy crap how much did all of that modification on the hood run you? I'm scared if I try to start messing with the hood I'll more then double the cost of it.

We thought it would be simple but once they cut it one thing led to another and it got to the point where I couldn't turn back so I told them make look like factory. Ended up being around 8 hours extra work to get it to look like part of the mold...figure that into the average labor rate and you can get a ballpark for what most bodyshops would charge. Thats why I wouldn't go messing around with trying to make it functional unless you are prepared to basically re-design the hood for Shelby LOL

I spent a bit more probably then the average bodyshop however I knew these guys would do it right and after the hack job I got on warranty paitn work, I was more then glad to pay a little more.

also btw how much is paint and install gonna cost me on the hood and the front fascia?? I just want to paint it to match (tungsten) and then would like to do black stripes painted on with the same dimensions as the GTH and GT500. Just need a quote on all of this assuming I let someone else do the install ofcourse. Thanks!

Not sure Mark. The Saleen SC does seem to be a bit flatter then the Roush but without test fitting there's no way to be sure. Shelby may be looking into re-designing this hood to fit roots/twinscrews but not sure. I did send them my pictures for reference since mine came out OK and is actually stronger then when i got it.

Amy posted on the Shelby site they would be testing the hood in the future with all other SC's but also stated it was originally designed to work with a Paxton as they are a partner with Shelby
