Classic center caps for new wheels

I have a set of OE Wheels GT4's ready to go on my car as soon as the weather warms and most of the potholes get filled.

Meantime I've been keeping occupied with the details like lugnuts and center caps. As far as the center caps go, I didn't like any of the standard choices for these wheels. The black background ones like the modern pony tribar caps just get lost on the face of the black wheel, and the silver/white ones just look out of place with my car's color scheme.

What I came up with is reproduction center caps from the '65-'66 styled steel wheels. I had to do some fabrication to add the circular spring type retainer that the newer type wheels use, but it wasn't too much of a task.

REALLY happy with how these turned out.

Very nice
The red stands out well against the black wheels.

LOVE those wheels! I'd get them done in Mineral with those red centers for my car. I'm jealous now.

wow. great job. i have those same style rims, except they are made by ct-r. i wanted to do the same thing as you, but i didn't want to spend the money for the caps and discover i couldn't get them to work.

stupid me, i threw away the stock center caps. i figure i could have just glued those caps onto my stock ones some how. oh well.

Those look great! I was thinking the same for my car to fit on the spinner center caps.

Where did you get the red emblems and how did you put it all together?

The short version is OE Wheels supplied plain black caps in two parts, a shiny black "lens" and a molded plastic clip with a spring that snaps into the wheel opening.

What I did was to get a set of reproduction '65-'66 styled steel wheel caps (you can get these through any classic mustang parts supplier). Since the backs of these are not flat (they are designed to fit into a 1-3/4" hole in the original wheels) I chucked up the plastic clips from OE in a lathe, and bored a 1-3/4" hole exactly through the center. This allowed me to push back of the repro cap though the clip, and secure it with the screws and washers included with the repros. I also put a bead of black silicone around the outer edge of the repro caps before screwing them together for insurance.

I hope the above makes sense.

Looks good. I've been wanting to do the same thing to my FR500's since I got them.

Yep, this is a great look. I did this to my Konig Beyonds a couple of years ago. I cut the top of the Konig center cap off, then JB Welded the repo caps to them. Was simple, but affective.

Effective indeed. Looks good on Konigs.

Funny coincidence, besides similar taste in center caps, we have the same style two tone paint on our brake calipers
