Be careful
I removed my side mirrors and the plastic insert for the lower grill/fascia to have them painted. The drivers side of the lower grill was already out. I just had to pop out the passenger side to remove. It is very simple to remove-almost too simple. One notch on the top and two S shaped clips on the bottom-on each side. It just made me nervous that half of the fascia came off. Then again, that fascia piece only costs $38 to replace. The body shop told me I would need to remove the bumper to take off this grill, but I managed to remove it with bumper intact.
169Stang, How easy is it to remove the mirrors? Do the door panels have to be removed or just the little plastic pieces behind the mirrors? How are you going to paint the mirrors .. Will you sand them smooth prior to painting?
Very Simple! Inside the door, opposite the mirror, those covers pop off easily. Unplug the harness, and remove the 3- 7/16" nuts. The mirror slides out easily. I used electrical tape to cover the holes where the mirror goes. I was going to just paint the upper inlay, but decided to paint the whole mirror. I spoke with the body shop guy and he thought they were smooth enough for the paint to fill evenly and not leave any orange peel. $100 for the mirrors and front lower grill/fascia. For Legend Lime Green, Ford calls the P1 paint code-Lime Gold. Weird! I dropped the parts off this morning and he said I can pick them up tomorrow. They'll take wax in a week.
Wow .. that's exactly what I want to do. My car goes into my local dealer to refinish the bumper for minor scratches incurred during shipping this Monday. I asked how much to paint the mirrors and they said they wouldn't do it because of the texture. I asked if the texture is a problem couldn't you just sand them smooth and they said no.
I think I will try talking dorectly to the painter tomorrow. Thanks for your reply!

The dealer I bought mine from told me the exact same thing. So I went to another dealer. He too was reluctant but I told him that I understand that the mirrors do flex and are vulnerable to chipping and such. I also told him I'd pay cash. He was afraid that I was going to be returning a bunch, wanting him to repair it, if it chipped and such. I pretty much removed his liability with cash.

I'll have parts tomorrow and will post pics!
Went back to my dealer that will be refinishing my bumper and asked again about painting the mirrors .. oh and the hood mounted windsheild washer nozzles.
This time I spoke to the shop foreman .. He said they would do it but could not gaurantee it. He said it can peel .. he would use an adhesion promoter but still
could not gaurantee it.
169Stang, anxious to hear how yours turned out .. hopefully with Pics!
